D'Agostino's book should be required reading for American Catholics interested in the international politics of religion and the possibilities-and consequences-of Vatican involvement in the life of nations. For scholars, the history of American Catholicism will never be the same.

Historian John A. Davis, said in 2005, "Everyone, it seems, is busy rethinking, revisioning, revisiting, remaking, remapping or demythologizing the Risorgimento. In book: Risorgimento, p. 7-52. Cite this publication. This book investigates the contribution of the Italian exile community in Europe and Latin America in the post Napoleonic era to imagining a new Italian political and economic community. By looking at the writings of such exiles, the book challenges recent historiography regarding the lack of genuine liberal culture in the Risorgimento.

The book centers on the Roman Question and the American reaction to it, a subject not previously well covered. Ultimately, although I draw inherent opinions from the book above, it really is an unbiased, scholarly, and yet reader friendly contribution to American religious history. Itis unfortuante that the author recemtly met a tragic end to his life, since he was such an excelltent scholar. 2 people found this helpful.
