Killing Mr. Griffin is a 1978 suspense novel by Lois Duncan about a group of teenage students at a New Mexico high school who plan to kidnap their strict English teacher, Mr. Griffin.

Killing Mr. Duncan developed the story from the character of Mark, who is involved in the kidnapping plan and is based on the first boyfriend of Duncan's oldest daughter. Mr. Griffin was based on the personality of a teacher one of Duncan's daughters had in high school

Killing Mr. Griffin taught me a lot about writing. Thrilling stuff Never once could Susan recall a morning when Mr. Griffin had not been there standing in front of them at the precise moment the bell stopped ringing. It was one of the most requested and enjoyed books I taught with my students. I think it’s influenced most of my writing since. Gail Giles, author of Right Behind You and Dark Song. Never once could Susan recall a morning when Mr. Other teachers might saunter in late, delayed in the teachers’ lounge for a last drag on a cigarette or a final swallow of morning coffee. Other teachers might pause in the hall to secure a button or tie a shoestring.

my 7th grader had to read this for school. he LOVED this book and HATES to read like most boys. So hard to find good books which interest our young men. Great job to the author.
We've all had a teacher like the eponymous Mr. Griffin who, by refusing to contribute to grade inflation and massage his students' self-esteem, contributes to years of future therapy. Most of us, as a rule, though, do not respond by kidnapping said teacher and inadvertently killing them.

Mr. Griffin may have good reason for his teaching policies, but his students are still too young to see things from his side. All they know is that English is no longer the breeze it was last year. So a group of students, the charismatic but sociopathic Mark, class president David, star athlete Jeff, and Queen Bee Betsy decide to teach the man a lesson. They enlist class geek Susan McConnell to be a decoy, which complicates things because she out of the entire group has a conscience. Eventually, things fall apart due to both poor planning and sheer bad luck.

Unlike some teen books, this one attempts to give the various adults' viewpoints as well as the students. It raises some questions about nature or nurture, but can be read simply for entertainment.
Great book
My youngest granddaughter asked for this author. She read one of her other books in school. She told me she couldn't wait to read.
Killing Mr. Griffin is an older story, but still a compelling read. Once I started, I had a hard time putting it down. I don't see many psychological thrillers for teens today. It was a nice change of pace from wizards and vampire romances. While the outcome of the book was a little predictable, it was still an enjoyable read and it kept me turning the pages to see if I was right. I would certainly recommend Killing Mr. Griffin to teens and adults alike.
My daughter was not pleased with this novel. There were a few inconsistencies that existed.
This book was part of a High School required read. Turns out it was a great book to read.
This is the third Lois Duncan novel I've read, and the one I liked least. The plot seemed contrived. Not up to her higher standard, but still suspenseful.
