Garratt also records the turbulent times, poor results, declining attendance, two near-moves away from California, and the role of post-Stoneham owners Bob Lurie and Peter Magowan in the Giants’ eventual reemergence as a baseball powerhouse. Garratt’s superb history of this great ball club makes the Giants’ story one of the most compelling of all Major League franchises.

The book describes the introduction of three Garratt locomotives to New Zealand in 1929 with great fanfare and their subsequent failure in the North Island trunk line work for which they were planned (due to several technical issues which could have been solved), and the rise of the NZR K Class. Also included in the book is an outline of the many proposals in the 1920s for other designs of Garratt locomotives, such as for work on the 1 in 15 Rimutaka Incline. The final chapter surveys the life and work of the 'G' class 4/6/2 type locos into which the engine units from the ill-fated Garratts were incorporated in 1937. Illustrated with black and white photos, diagrams, maps, appendix, bibliography, and index. 100 pages.
