Meet the famous German author. Wolf was born Christa Ihlenfeld on March 18, 1929, in the village of Landsberg an der Warthe. Wolf was brought up in a middle-class, pro-Nazi family. With the defeat of Germany in 1945 she moved with her family to East Germany. Nirgends (No Place on Earth) in 1979 and further: Kassandra (Cassandra), Störfall (Accident), Auf dem Weg nach Tabou (On the Way to Taboo), and Stadt der Engel (City of Angels). Wolf resigned from the Socialist Party in 1989 and later spoke out against reunification with West Germany.

Christa Wolf was a German novelist, short-story writer, and essayist, first won acclaim in the former East Germany as an independent spirit who combined her commitment to the aspirations of the socialist state with a humanistic concern for its citizens as individuals. By the 1990's she was regarded internationally as one of the most thought-provoking writers in postwar German literature. By exposing the tensions between socialist ideals and personal realities, the work created an ideological controversy within the GDR that was all the more notable because Wolf had set her story against the backdrop of the just-erected Berlin Wall.
