Painters Eleven (variant names Painters 11 or P11) was a collective of abstract artists active in Canada between 1953 and 1960. Since the 1920s, artists in English Canada had been heavily influenced by the landscape painting of the Group of Seven, the Canadian Group of Painters and the Eastern Group of Painters. The Canadian public often regarded modernist movements such as Cubism, Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism as bizarre and subversive.

Painters Eleven remained in existence from 1953 to 1960, promoting both the individual artists’ work and the role of abstraction in Canadian art. Canadian abstraction followed a wave of abstract art that began to appear in the United States following the Second World War. Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline were seminal figures within this revolutionary movement that often looked to Surrealism for inspiration. In 1969, it was renamed The Robert McLaughlin Gallery, following the gift of 37 works from the collection of Alexandra Luke, and a generous donation towards construction of a new gallery by her husband Ewart McLaughlin.

For a major retrospective of the work of the 11 Canadian artists members of Painters Eleven, Fox provides six topical chapters on biographical details, the artists' entrance into the New York scene, the influence of Clement Greenberg, and their final years.
