Oleg V. Khlevniuk presents a new biography on one of history’s most ruthless dictators, Joseph Stalin. Taking the reader well behind the (iron) curtain, Khlevniuk explores some of the many topics only briefly mentioned in passing before, if not entirely erased from outsider discussion. Joseph Stalin, born Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili, came from a frugal household.
A brief biography of joseph stalin. Joseph Stalin was one of the worst tyrants of the 20th century. His real name Joseph Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili and he was born in 1879. His father was a poor shoemaker. He died when Joseph was 11. His mother was a washerwoman. Following Lenin's death in 1924 the cunning and devious Stalin or Joseph Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili 1879 took power. By 1928 he had made himself dictator. His main enemy Leon Trotsky (Lev Davidovich Bronstein 1879-1940) was exiled 1929. In 1940 he was assassinated in Mexico.
After Lenin's death, in 1924, Stalin set out to destroy the old party leadership and take total control. Some scholars have argued that Stalin's record of killings amount to genocide and make him one of history's most ruthless mass murderers. At first, he had people removed from power through bureaucratic shuffling and denunciations. Many were exiled abroad to Europe and the Americas, including presumed Lenin successor Leon Trotsky. Though his popularity from his successes during World War II was strong, Stalin's health began to deteriorate in the early 1950s.
