The thermal analysis is advantageous in the sense that it gives quickly the overall view of thermal behaviour of a material under various conditions. H. Suga, H. Chihara and S. Seki, J. Chem. Calorimetric work provides accurate heat capacity data which enable to derive thermodynamic functions including the enthalpy and entropy. The latter quantity is especially important in judging whether the material obeys the third law of thermodynamics. However, calorimetric work leads occasionally to an erroneous conclusion if the work is not preceded by thermal analysis performed under various conditions. Soc. Jp. 82 (1961) 2. 2. Suga and S. Seki, Bull.

This book consists of seven chapters and begins with a brief outline of the history and meaning of heat and temperature before listing the techniques of thermal analysis. The reader is then introduced to the basis of thermal analysis, paying particular attention to the macroscopic theories of matter, namely, equilibrium thermodynamics, irreversible thermodynamics, and kinetics. The next chapter discusses thermometry, focusing on the international temperature scale and the techniques of measuring temperature.

Differential thermal analysis (DTA)/thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) (DT-60H thermal analyzer, Shimadzu, Japan) changes for magnesium silicate are shown in Fig. The data shows an endothermic peak with a maximum at Tmax 119 °C resulting in a mass loss of 2. % of the total weight. This loss continues at a slow rate up to 700 °C to yield another 1. % mass loss, followed by an intense exothermic peak at Tmax 750 °C accompanied by a mass loss of . %.

Thermal analysis (TA) techniques provide valuable information on the thermal properties of materials, and are relatively simple compared to many alternative methods. Our Thermal Analysis Tips and Hints booklet is designed to help TA users navigate through the different measurement techniques, method parameters and sample preparation procedures, providing useful tips and hints on how to obtain the best possible results from your measurements.
