I had been to the Practical County Beef Show every year for as long as I could recall, watching and cheering for Ronnie in the show ring. How will she ever sell them at auction now? First-time novelist Houts paints an idyllic yet authentic picture of farm life as she takes Libby and her family through the ups and downs of cattle raising and fair-showing with sly humor and a flair for description and characterization. Rural readers and their urban cousins alike will laugh at the Darling sisters-Precious, Lil, and Ohma-who are fine villains, all, and they will cry with Libby as she leads her prize steers to slaughter.

For my family, the Practical County Fair was all about beef. Dad's family had raised some of the best beef in Indiana for generations. The Ryan family farm, dubbed Ryansmeade by Granddad's Irish parents, sat on four hundred acres located exactly fourteen and a half miles from Nowhere. Population four thousand and not really growing much. Now, I've often wondered, Who on God's green earth names a town Nowhere? Because Nowhere is actually somewhere

The less fun part is the Beef Princess pageant she ambivalently enters, a contest that pits her against a beautiful but obnoxious girl, one of the Darling sisters. And the terrible part is the knowledge that the steer she's carefully tended will be auctioned off, sold to the highest bidder for meat.

We love this book. It is a perfect book for anyone who ever has or does show livestock. The emotions portrayed in this book are real, and this book is the most accurate for the livestock shows and auctions at fair. I have purchased this book several times as gifts for various 4-H members and mentors.

I read this book after my daughter read it. She had just finished her first year of showing cattle at fair. She went through the same stages of feelings as Libby Ryan did. It brought back my memories of my first fair experiences. But if you have never experienced showing at a fair, this story makes it real. It also demonstrates how to try an experience out of your comfort zone. And even if you don't win, the valuable lessons you gain are forever. Fun and fast read, great for those hot summer days.

I love a fun quick read. THE BEEF PRINCESS OF PRACTICAL COUNTY by Michelle Houts is both. Libby is a 12-year-old girl who lives on a cattle farm in Indiana. Raising cattle has been a family tradition for years. When Libby's older brother goes off to college it is Libby's turn to raise a calf into a full grown steer and show it at the annual fair. After the contest the steers are auctioned off and Libby has a chance to start her college fund by getting a good price for her steer. Libby also decides to compete in the pageant to try to win the title of The Beef Princess. Middle grade girls will love this book.

Having grown up on a farm with beef cattle and also being excited about the county fair, I really enjoyed this story. I like supporting local authors too.

This book features Libby, a 12 year old girl, who is determined to prove herself to everyone, including herself. And what is refreshing is that she does it with style and grace and in the end, she understand the true meaning of love and friendship and commitment.
A LOT!

It's a family book that will have you laughing, crying and holding your breath and sometimes all in the same chapter. And you will know about farms and raising cattle.

Not only is it well worth the read, but it will stay with you long after you have finished it. When I finished it, I couldn't wait for more and finally, after a long wait, there is a sequel.

Michelle Houts also published The Practical County Drama Queen and if you fell in love with Libby, wait until you fall in love with her little sister, Frannie. But do read them in order!

Excellent literature.

Great family book - enjoyable for all ages and especially those who have grown up (or wish they had grown up) knowing the farm life and all the wonderful things that go along with it!
It was a drag it just kept going on and on I normally read a book fast but I had to keep putting it down. It had no hook the only good part was the ending it was pretty good but I wouldn't want to read it again or recommend it to anyone. Next time Michelle houts writes again he should try adding action and surprising twists. Thank you.
