I will agree with all of reviews I read that were 4 stars or above! My son just turned 6 and is in 1st grade. He brings home 6 books a night from school to read, one of them being a book I am supposed to read to him (he is in what our schools call the Gate program). One night I pulled this book out of his school bag. As I read the book, tears formed in my eyes. How he chose this book, I do not know? But it could not have come at a better time for us.

My son's grandpa has been diagnosed with cancer and is going through treatments. My son is so very close with his grandpa. My son is a very smart little boy and he wants to know everything about everything- even some of the stuff we think may be too much for him. When we thought we could slide by with few explanations about his grandpa- he shocked us and asked us- "Why is Grandpa sick?" "Is Grandpa going to die?" "Will I ever be able to see Grandpa again?" When we tried to slide by with vague answers he said "I'm not stupid. I want to know why." So we did explain it to the best of our knowledge and with what we believe in. With cancer, death is always a possibility and we feel he is now much more prepared for the possibility than if he knew nothing at all.

This book hit dead on - beginning with the boy's grandfather nearing death in bed. Without outright stating the grandfather died, the feeling of loss was beautifully captured. I felt my tears surface as I read about the boy holding the parrot in a dark room. My eyes lit up as the transformation was made to the boy finally seeing Atlantis come alive! My son's grandpa taught him how to use his imagination and this book emphasized this in the relationship between the boy and his grandfather. I really felt the book was teaching a child how to cope with loss. It is okay to grieve and it is also okay to look around and find good memories of that person all around you.

Those who rated this book with low stars.... I feel did not see the bigger messages in this book. Even my little boy after listening to me read and pointing out things on each page (laughing about how you can find a mouse on almost every page!)- gave me a huge hug at the end and said "I hope Grandpa gets better. I will miss him. But I know he will be all around me even if he leaves." Yeah, I have a smart little boy. I am sorry some of the reviewers aren't that smart or are too afraid to allow their children....or grandchildren....see something captured in this book that is somewhat a real deal we have to all deal with- death of a loved one.

Thank you Colin Thompson. And yes- I will being seeking out more of your work!

My five-and-a-half year old daughter loves this book, and we plan on checking out other titles by the author. "Looking for Atlantis" is a visual treat for any child and adult who has an active imagination. The illustrations are fantastical, magical, and give free rein to creativity and imagination. The book begins on a somber note. A young boy is at his grandfather's death bed, and is exhorted to find the lost city of Atlantis. The boy is puzzled - how is he to find this mythical lost city and added to this problem is his grief at the loss of his beloved grandfather.

What ensues over the next couple of pages is a magical adventure as the boy finds himself opening up to the possibilities of other worlds, a different way of looking at things however mundane, and of the power of imagination and an open-mind. It is through this widening of his mind and the way that he looks at the world around him that the boy comes to the realization that his grandfather may no longer be physically around, but his love and his 'essence' lives on in the boy's surroundings, in the things he does and sees, limited only by the power of his imagination.

I have held brief but meaningful discussions with my daughter about death since she was a toddler, and she now accepts that living things, people, animals, plants do eventually die. It helped her deal with the death of our beloved pet rabbit last summer. Death is not to be feared, it is to be understood, and I felt this book handled the topic quite well, albeit in an abstract manner. This is where we adults can play meaningful roles - by guiding our young to make sense of what is often a painful and difficult subject. "Looking for Atlantis" is a beautiful, imaginative book that will be treasured by my daughter and I for a long time to come.
