Very well organized, in depth analysis of the history and politics of each country, overall a very good read. I had this and a Peretz book assigned to me for my poly sci class and basically only read this one because all of the information found in the Peretz book could be found in here but explained a lot better. I would recommend this to the casual reader if you want to learn more about the Middle East and don't just want to use Wikipedia.

This book is a great reference book, with one chapter on each MENA state overviewing its history, politics, and political culture. Each chapter of the book is 20-30 pages and provides just enough information for you to have a decent understanding of how each country works. Especially for students studying the entire MENA region who don't have time to take an entire course on a single country, reading just a chapter on a country in this book can serve as a very useful foundation.

I had to read this book for a Middle East in Politics class. Although it is a large book, it is an easy read and yet still thorough. It isn't overly wordy and is written to be understood by more than just scholarly readers. I would recommend to anyone interested in learning about the history, culture and interactions between the states within the Middle East.
