Phil Metzger is the best instructor of perspective I know of. His methods are easy to use, don't require a math . I don't work in watercolors, I quilt, and I've found this book invaluable as a guide to understanding perspective. An excellent addition to any beginners collection. Author Phil Metzger guides you through a series of mini-lessons and exercises teaching that perspective is really just how we see the world. Earlier in this post I recommended one of Phil Metzger’s newer books on perspective. Most people think perspective is just about vanishing points and how parallel lines seem to converge in the distance. But Phil gets into atmospheric perspective, like how objects appear smaller from above and how subtle colors for lighting can change based on your viewpoint. But he actually has a couple out there and Perspective Without Pain is one of his best works. With this book you’ll learn how to create perspective without any tools.

In this comprehensive guide, Phil Metzger demystifies perspective, presenting it simply as a matter of mimicking the way we see-like the way a distant mountain appears blue, or a road seems to narrow in the distance. North Light, the publishers of the Watercolor Basics series has hit paydirt once again with Phil Metzgers' Perspective Secrets. In direct simple and engaging language Metzger takes you through the many types of perspective without terrifying you with wordy rules and procedures. It is all covered in this handy and educational volume. You move through beautiful examples of putting space and the illusion of air in your paintings to the subtle issues of close-up perspective such as with bricks. There is also some information on perspective dealing with stairs and inclines all supported by Mr. Metzger's handsome paintings. As with other volumes in this series the subject matter is gone into both more deeply and with more approachable and beautiful artwork. This is a must have for any budding painter.

This is an older booker ( I think it was published in 1999), but it's still a great guide for the new artist who is wishing to paint realistically. The fact that it's designed for a watercolor is a bonus to me, since I paint in watercolor, but I believe artist of any medium.

Before I purchased this, I was unaware of the many ways in which a watercolor artist can visually convey depth--so it was instructive in that way and if you are teaching yourself at home, you will really benefit or if your teacher is a little weak, you will benefit. When I finally, however, arrived at the section about 3 point perspective --the most challenging of all-- I found the explanation confusing. Throughout the book, the pictures were not inspiring to me so i read about them rather than trying to paint them myself. Next winter, when I am in the house a lot, I might try to work my way through the 3 point perspective section.

I already had this book & wanted one for my 2 students. For me it's not only a great book on perspective but gives many good watercolor lessons.

I haven't reviewed the book in depth but a lot of the information seems pretty obvious. It has some projects/lessons though the instructions aren't that detailed. I bought the book used at a very low price so it is still worth the expenditure.
Perspective is a very hard concept to learn for a beginner. This book explained it an an easy-to-read step process and included lots of good pictures and examples. Love and refer to it all the time. Highly recommended
