by Knut Schmidt-Nielsen. Most of this book is not statistics, it’s really physics. How can birds fly and lift themselves up in the air? How do dogs cool themselves by panting? He’s looking at things that people take for granted, and saying, these are amazing feats of engineering. One reason I connect it with statistics – it’s not only the graphs – is the fact there’s an interplay between physics modelling, data collection and statistical analysis.

Knut Schmidt-Nielsen was a prominent figure in the field of comparative physiology and Professor of Physiology Emeritus at Duke University. An elegant analysis of how animals work and function ) An elegant analysis of how animals work and function.

Knut Schmidt-Nielsen. Cambridge University Press, New York, 1972. Knut Schmidt-Nielsen.

An elegant analysis of how animals work and function. Professor Schmidt-Nielsen's incisive account gives a clear understanding of comparative physiology in relation to body size, form and function, energy supply, and environment. The author is concerned with principles. For example, he explains how difficult it may be to lose heat and water from the respiratory tract. This leads to a consideration of the mechanism of panting as a means of heat loss. The author describes the centuries-old problem of how birds breathe, which now has been solved in his laboratory. He then discusses energy expenditure for swimming, running, and flying, and the effects of activity on heat balance. The ability of mammals to maintain different parts of the body at different temperatures is explained on the basis of counter-current heat exchange; a related mechanism permits the fast-swimming tuna to enjoy some of the advantages of being warm-blooded. The problems raised by being small in size, or large, are considered in detail. It is shown that many physiological variables can be placed on a scale which permits the derivation of non-dimensional numbers to describe the interrelations between different parameters. This interesting and stimulating account was written primarily for students, but since it brings together and synthesizes much new and up-to-date information it will interest all biologists and physiologists.

It's a fun read. I bought a cheap used copy following Andrew Gelman's recommendation on five books (Google it). It's a better endorsement than I could write.

I picked up this book in college in 1978. This is one of those rare books that is both simple and technical. I was fascinated by how, for instance, bird lungs and human kidneys use similar mechanisms to do their work. This would be a great book of encouragement for any HS or college student who has been bit by the bio bug.

One of the best introductions to the thoughtful analysis of physiological adaptations of animals. Extremely well-written for a general audience as well as rigorously grounded in fundamental chemistry and physics with surprising tales for those new to this discipline. It is an extremely small paperback; buy it used for one-tenth the price.

There are many people in the world who don't realize that Animal Physiology is the most intensely interesting thing that anybody could ever study. This book will make sure that you are not one of those people.
