Dr. Elaine Aron’s newest book, Psychotherapy and the Highly Sensitive Person, redefines the term “highly sensitive” for the professional researcher and practitioner. She dispels common misconceptions about the relationship between sensitivity and other personality traits, such as introversion and shyness, and further defines the trait for the benefit of both the clinician and patient. Readers will learn to assess for the trait, distinguish it from clinical diagnoses such as panic disorder or avoidant personality disorder, understand how sensitivity may change the presentation of a problem such as depression or shyness, and generally inform, validate, and improve the quality of life for these clients. She pays particular attention to self-esteem issues and helping patients separate effects of their innate temperament from problems due to their personal learning histories. Dr. Aron keeps both patient and practitioner in mind as she suggests ways to adapt treatment for highly sensitive persons and how to deal with the typical issues that arise. Three appendices provide the HSP Scale, a summary of the extensive research on this innate trait, and its relation to DSM diagnoses. Through this helpful guide, therapists will see a marked improvement in their ability to assist highly sensitive clients.

Extremely important for learning about the Highly Sensitive Person. I gave this to my therapist to help to treat me and others like me in his practice. As now is known 15% to 20% of the population are such people and must be understood. I had struggled with a diagnose, been medicated for, etc. for bipolar for 40 years only to finally find that I am simply a Highly Sensitive Person. I was taken off bipolar meds and treated properly and my life is completely changed for the better. This book was a God send and the author is the authority in this area.

This book changed my life. I cannot express how grateful I am to Dr. Elaine Aron for writing this book. It's as though she went into my head and captured all my deepest thoughts, some of which I didn't even know how to articulate, but just felt. If you're an "HSP" you will identify immediately. It's been a year since I've read the book, and my life has changed dramatically. Don't wait, buy it now. Also a great read for anyone who has a loved one who is highly sensitive.

HSP therapist (who, alas, is across the country from me) Ane Axford recently recommended this book to HSPs, not just therapists to HSPs. As I am about to get back into therapy with a new therapist (or therapists, if the first one doesn't work out), I decided to read this book and see if it had any insights for my process of finding a therapist and going through therapy. The book is a fabulous addition to the Highly Sensitive Person books. I'm finding that it gives me new insights into how I relate to the world. If you've read one or more of the other HSP books by Elaine Aron and found them useful, and you're looking for a greater understanding of yourself, I recommend picking this one up as well.

This was a great read! It's dense but will give you a new insight into HSP's as the author does give considerable attention to other related disorders in one of her appendix's as well as a few references throughout the book that no other HSP book I have read comes close to! I came away thinking I never had ADHD growing up, and that was a big eye opener. This author does take a different approach then the other 11 books that I've read on this subject in that she does refer to them as being critical a bunch of times throughout the book. Other than that what stood out to me a lot was the depth of the information. If you are a "one and done" reader then I recommend this one above all others because it offers the most insight into the subject. I also recommend this as a book to start off if your new to the trait.

Very good book to help yourself or give to your therapist to help you through. Definitely would recommend this book.

This book changed my life today!
If this book was written in 2010 like it says in the copyright, then we need a Reprint of this book.
I paid way too much for a book written in 2010. For any other book I mean, because this book is worth so much to so many,
that its worth a lot more than I paid for it. Can you tell "I'm a HSP"? Thank You

I'm glad I chose this book as the first I've read on this subject. It makes sense of my experience. Suddenly everything falls into place. Thank you.
Excellent information. Thanks to the author for researching and presenting this subject.
