This book records the major exhibition of British Painting 1700-1760 held at the Tate Gallery in 1987. It charts the emergence of a British School of painting during the first half of the eighteenth century, from its exclusive and foreign-dominated status in the reign of Queen Anne, up to the establishment of a true native school by the end of the long reign of George II in 1760. This step was largely achieved through the genius of England's first great native painter, William Hogarth (1697 - 1764).
