José Victoriano (Carmelo Carlos) González-Pérez (23 March 1887 – 11 May 1927), better known as Juan Gris (Spanish: ; French: ), was a Spanish painter born in Madrid who lived and worked in France most of his life. Beautifully produced exhibition catalog with many excellently reproduced color plates. Great for anyone interested in a comprehensive overview of this brilliant artist's work.
I am not sure where to begin. My comments include my own thoughts and corrections to the reviewer who offered only two stars. I may not show up with a verified purchase: I purchased my copy (hardcover) at the exhibition in 1985. It is not intended to be a coffee table book. It is an exhibition catalogue. As such in includes lengthy essays by the organizers and other specialists in the field, i.e. early twentieth-century art. There are not only 12 color plates in this book, there are 69. I counted them myself because 12 was inaccurate and insulting to the exhibition organizers and authors. Yes, there are many black and white photographs, but they include: 1) works of art not created in color e.g. charcoal on paper, 2) works of art by other artists, and 3) a wonderful array of archival photographs of Gris, Josette Gris, and their circles of friends. And works of art destroyed in World War II which had been only photographed in black and white.

That said, Juan Gris is described in much of the literature to be the "third Cubist artist" lumping him with Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. This exhibition was the first major effort to break that linkage and view Gris as a great artist on his own merits, who worked in his own time and space if you will. For Picasso and Braque their Analytical Cubist period was over in World War I (by 1916). Gris was a generation younger Picasso and Braque. He came to Paris following Picasso. BUT, once there he created almost immediately a new style based upon several great Analytical Cubist paintings, and then took off. He built his own vocabulary, his own color spectrum, and sense of pure delight and whimsy Braque and Picasso lacked or left behind. Simply put Gris is the Great artist who worked in a style based in part on Cubism, but only in part. I am deeply gratified we had an artists of his genius. And, I regret that he died age 40.
