Anvil's core is made up of drummer Robb Reiner, and guitarist/ vocalist Steve & Kudlow, childhood friends who are brought together by a love of hard rock's transformative power. Their friendship is sorely tested in this story, as Anvil catches the early wave of thrash metal only to see itself fall off of the board and get drowned by the very bands that it helped to inspire.

Taken as an extension of the film, THE STORY OF ANVIL, this is a decent companion covering and expanding overlooked material.

The book initially fleshes out the two band members early lives and family which were glossed over in the picture, and another section fills in the gaps about the early trajectory of the band decently, but you have to read between the lines that there's more to the narrative than what comes up in the movie and book. Anvil grew as local band, polishing their music and stage work, building on often unwanted (audiences prefer what they already know live?) original material and creating an image, and got a record deal. With a regional label. And signed with a manager who shelved them. Oops.

Attic Records was a Canadian outfit, had two acts with decent pop exposure outside Canada, the Nylons and Triumph, and had just resurrected the dormant '60s children's music Clancey Brothers and Tommy Makem clone, the (Irish) Rovers, on the charts after 14 years. Attic also inked a distribution deal for the U.K., but Anvil's releases didn't have a corresponding U.S. version coming out (Triumph was on RCA in the U.S.), and Canada's market was maybe 10% of the U.S. size, 25 million people and a Canadian "gold record" benchmark award of 50,000 copies while the U.S. RIAA award was based on 500,000 copies sold. In effect, Anvil's Lps still likely had a breakeven point about 15-20,000 copies, but being based in Toronto that border (Buffalo and Detroit across the border) put a crimp on record sales' potential. Anvil's METAL ON METAL and FORGED IN FIRE, however, both charted on the Canadian magazine RPM's album charts (5/15/82 and 6/04/83, respectively) in the middle ranges of the 50 position and 100 position listings. No corresponding U.S. releases, however.

In 1987, the book mentioned that Anvil self-financed their next album as an indie. I thought reading the book that the 1987+ albums were private press albums, paid for and sold after bookings, but checking around I noted that vinyl copies of the 1987-1990 albums were on Capitol's custom labels, via Metal Blade/Enigma, meaning that they got retail distribution through Capitol at the time in the U.S. STRENGTH OF STEEL bottom charted briefly on the Billboard 200 position album chart neatly between two brief listings for period Lizzy Borden Lps in mid-1987. There seems to be no trade advertising for the band at the time; however, checking my "avoid these evil rock music groups" Christian books and films (DVDs) for mention of Anvil, the band appears in Eric Barger's ROCK TO ROCK book listing and gets a short section and Lp cover screen shot (METAL TO METAL Lp and "666" lyrics) about 10 minutes into DVD-2, section IV, of Eric Holmberg's documentary, HELLS BELLS, circa 1987-89. Eric Barger had been in a regional bar band based out of Seattle some years before, Sluggo, and HELLS BELLS is a fundie teenage church video staple from the deep anti-heavy metal rock South. Anvil doesn't bear mention in books by Tipper Gore, Bob Larson, Jeff Godwin, nor Dan & Steve Peters anti-rock books. If bad publicity is better than no publicity, then Anvil missed a priceless opportunity to get on Tipper Gore's fundie alt-right PMRC crusade's bad side.

The book glosses over the post-Capitol/Metal Blade period and picks up at events leading to the rockumentary comeback. At the time of the movie, Anvil had an astounding (!) twelve album discography, working on THIS IS THIRTEEN, which I think thematically is a kind of soundtrack for the movie. Anyone interested in the day-to-day grind of 3rd tier aging out working musicians should find the book and film fascinating. Unlike the movie, there's some back-handed explanations about the record labels, managers, and former band members. Frankly, if anyone wants to scare off teenage boys from dedicating themselves to a pop music career, run a showing of THE STORY OF ANVIL and THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION PART 2 for them and show the dark side of going nowhere after the high school. Early '80s Anvil's experiences most closely parallel Odin's abandonment by their bankrupt patron in THE DECLINE... documentary.

First things first--ANVIL (if your not familiar with the band) ROCKS! This book is the PERFECT companion to the dvd of the same name, but brings us much more detail that the doc lacked. The crazy stories from the road are worth the price of admission alone! ANVIL is finally getting some recognition--and a big bow of respect goes out to AC/DC for allowing ANVIL to come back out onstage when the stadiums were packed up and letting them play some more music--kudos to Angus& co. Before I continue...the first ANVIL album I ever heard was the groundbreaking 'Metal On Metal'--widely considered the bands best effort. The truth however, is this band has NEVER released a bad album--nor have they deviated from the sound that we ANVIL-HEADS have grown to love! The words 'sell-out' just aren't in these guys vocabulary! After the 3rd ANVIL album (the fantastic 'Forged In Fire'), the band seemingly dropped from the 'metal radar' (if you will)...trying to capitalize on the bands newer and more major deal, Attic Records released the sub-par 'Backwaxed' album--a mish-mash of 1 (killer) new track and four 'demoes' that the band FELT should remain unheard by the public. You gotta respect when a band wants that. Lips is still pissed to this day over 'Backwaxed'--and discourages ANVIL fans from even buying it--this ANVIL fan has to this day STILL not succumbed out of respect for Mr. Kudrow. I have all 13 of the other albums though! And every single one KILLS! This band pioneered the term 'Speed Metal'--they were doing it BEFORE 'METALLICA'--and in my book, doing it BETTER. Imagine the frustration of KNOWING that bands like METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH,and ANTHRAX all borrowed from your sound and acknowledged it--yet your band still hasn't hit 'the big time'--seeing these bands rise to the top of the pile really had an effect on Lips and Robbo's lives--and this book gives you every detail. The stories connecting certain songs to their true stories are HYSTERICAL! At times you'll think Lip's missed his calling and should have been a comedian--and if you've ever seen the video for the song 'Mad Dog' off of 'Strength Of Steel', you'll know what I mean--his 'Nice Jewish Pet Shop Owner' is belly-bursting funny! It's all here...the ups, the downs, the drugs, the fights, the mishaps, the SEX--and ANVIL albums were never complete without sexually oriented gems like 'Jackhammer', 'Butter-Bust Jerky', 'Hair Pie', 'Bush Pig', 'Rubber Neck', and 'Safe Sex' (to name just a few over the years)--I know this sounds cliche, but I could NOT put this book down. Not since Marilyn Manson's 'Long Hard Road Out Of Hell' has a rock bands story enthralled me this way. After being an ANVIL fan for over 24 years, it's a great feeling to see them FINALLY getting their due. And the point that I'd like to make is there are quite a few 'ANVIL'S' out there--bands that have stuck to their guns and remained HEAVY, dirty, and fast--another personal favorite of mine that comes to mind (and also from ANVIL's homeland of Canada) is EXCITER--another band that pioneered the 'speed metal' sound. It takes above all self respect and LOVE of what you do to keep going no matter how tough the terrain gets along the way. Being in an 'ANVIL' (lol)of my own for over 20 years, I can attest to the fact that it is LOVE for what we do that keeps bands like ours going--NOT the money...because for bands like ours--there is very little to be had!!!
