the operas of mozart, written by william mann is as intricate and detailed as some of the works themselves. mann's book delves into many different aspects of mozart's life and times, which gives the pieces some context. mann also does well to give a literary interpretation of the operas, as they do operate not just on a musical level. the technical musical analysis seems to be the least of his concerns, being more concerned about the general themes and ideas that mozart communicates through his work. he is knowledgeable enough to criticize some of mozart's less superior materials, as well as, be able to praise his highest achievements.

if you are looking for a book that gives the reader contextual understanding of the operas, this should be a very good source.

This is the best book about Mozart operas ever. It's witty and highly readable, and has many (but not too many) snippets of the scores so you can follow the music alongside reading the text. Very knowledgeable but not at all ponderous.

As a student studying music, this is great for pulling up those random facts about operas that no one really knows. There are so many little nit-picky things Mozart incorporates into his operas, and this is just another source to find another appreciation for his work.

Excellent book for following the operas of Mozart. Detailed analysis of the individual scores and of the development of Mozart's style from his early to his last operas. Very helpful too in listening to the operas for which there are no libretti with English translations. I would especially recommend it to anyone who purchases the recent collection of Mozart's complete operas which has no libretti at all with any of its 44 discs. Mozart: The Complete Operas/Various (Box)

In this exhaustive and profound study, William Mann has produced the definitive guide to Mozart's operatic music. No lover of Mozart's operas can afford to be without it. It is a model of what a guide to any opera should be.

"All men, to her, are beasts, and it would be beneficial to her personal growing-up if she had been pleasantly raped by Don Juan."

The author wrote that. Seriously? You are an idiot. How do you know that all men are beasts to Donna Anna, have you performed the role? Pretty sure she loved her Father which is why she avenges his murder and her rape. I could go on about Ottavio but this book is old as I am sure you are now.
