George Gershwin (/ˈɡɜːrʃ. wɪn/; born Jacob Bruskin Gershowitz, September 26, 1898 – July 11, 1937) was an American composer and pianist whose compositions spanned both popular and classical genres. Among his best-known works are the orchestral compositions Rhapsody in Blue (1924) and An American in Paris (1928), the songs Swanee (1919) and Fascinating Rhythm (1924), the jazz standard I Got Rhythm (1930), and the opera Porgy and Bess (1935) which spawned the hit Summertime.

I have purchased several books in the "Simply ..." series and most of them I have been very pleased with. Like other reviewers have said, the bindings are a problem for laying open on your music stand. In addition to that problem on the Simply Gershwin book, the arrangements are really not up to par with the arrangements in other books of the series. Most of the other books like Simply Standards, Simply Porter, Simply Christmas, Simply Brickman, and Simply Rogers and Hart (my favorite) have some nice lush chord voicings, created with just three or four fingers (between both hands). These make all the difference in making the pieces enjoyable to play. However, this is a lacking quality in the Simply Gershwin book. A piece like "But not for me" should be prime material for the arranger to offer some beautiful chords and passing phrasings. Unfortunately, I am very disappointed with these arrangements. While the right hand presents the melodies in a fairly straight forward manner (which is fine), the left hand is overly simplistic and rudimentary in often times just providing the root note of the chord and then maybe the third and the fifth with an occasional seventh. There are also times when a passing note may be thrown in, but I've found a few places where that note just sounds out of place. I'll keep working on some of these and report back if I have a change of heart, but so far I don't find many pleasing and enjoyable sounds coming out of the piano with these, and so therefore I'll probably work with the other books more.

There are maybe a few songs in here that i will play over and over. I don't know who wants to play all those very complicated songs in a simple version... I don't have a clue why in the world they would arrange Lullaby for String Quartet for easy piano, it is so weird like that, and the same for Blue Lullaby and Rhapsody in Blue...they are just not all that listenable in this easy format, in my opinion." The Man I Love" is wonderful, and i love "Three-Quarter Blues," also. I cannot have enough different arrangements of "Summertime" and "Embraceable You," and i do play them sometimes, when i am playing from this book, but these are not my favs of those arrangements, i prefer the "Standards" book in this same series for those.

The book is too stiff and it is impossible to have it lay flat on my piano. I have to put rocks or something in front of the corners of the pages. I've tried bending it and everything. Nothing works.

I love this piano book! It makes the classics playable for those of us who are too late for high skill. I agree with another review that the binding is very difficult and turning pages is a problem. I am still trying to play 'Rhapsody in Blue" and will get it some day!

MY wife love to hear me play the piano and sing her the songs. I sang for her "Embraceable You", "Love Is Here to Stay", "They Can't Take That Away from Me", "Someone to Watch over me" and ""Rhapsody in Blue". When I was at the University many years ago, my advanced piano instructor assigned me to George Gershwin music. I had played his Prelude I and II, which this book has the simple version of Prelude II. I also have the complete more complex version of Rhapsody in Blue. Our older Baldwin Upright piano had broken keys and was out of tone. I had gotten it from my mother years ago. We gave it to the Salvation Army and got a new Roland F-120 digital grand piano with volume control. The old piano weight over a ton and this new one weight only 150 pounds. These tones in this Simply Gershwin music book are easy to play. You can play them over and over again and not get tried of them.

I love the "Simply" series. Perfect for the older player who hasn't touched the piano since her lessons in childhood.
Easy arrangements, but difficult to keep book open without taking it apart and putting it in a binder.
