This was my textbook for my course "Analysis of Popular Music since 1950." This was an upper division/graduate theory offering. As another reviewer cites, "This is a good book if you know theory." However, when guided by the instructor, the student need not be a theory scholar. I found Stephenson's, perspective to be particularly useful in delineating kinds of phrase structure and associated harmonic progressions that are stylistically common and idiomatic. I consider this the text most appropriate of those I have reviewed both for its general application and for its keen analytical insight.

I was in the last class Dr. Stephenson taught before the book was published. He is a terrific educator, and a man I respect for both his pedagogical excellence, and his Christian walk. This book should be required reading for anyone who carefully assists students to make meaning of music in an ever-evoluing musical marketplace.

This book is a serious analytical study of rock music. It is an in depth look at the theoretical underpinnings of what makes rock unique. It is similar to the standard textbooks on tonal theory, but explores the unique aspects of rock and roll. It includes discussion of rhythm, phrasing, form and chord progression.

This book is great, gives good ideas on how popular songs are constructed. The more music theory you know, the more you will get out of this book. There is a lot of terminology that non musicians may not know.

This book is what I have been looking for. I hesitated to buy it based on the price and am lucky someone bought it for my off my wish list. After reading it I would not hesitate to spend the money. It does require some theory knowledge but I don't consider myself an expert on theory and can easily understand it. As someone whos only background is rock and pop it's interesting to see where the form deviates from more classical forms (for lack of a better word). Much of serious theory glosses over or ignores rock. It also doesn't appear to jive with what is happening in the songs I love. This book was the missing piece.

My students have found it engaging and have been able to write excellent music inspired by models in the text. One of the book's core points -- that rock music is distinct as an idiom and is not simply a small digression from classical practice (as is often implied by many textbooks on music fundamentals) -- is thoroughly demonstrated. Dr. Stephenson's approach to rock analysis is nuanced and intellectually rigorous as he celebrates a canon of music that is widely loved yet so often marginalized in university settings.
