Presents a "psychohistory" of the gay male community, from Walt Whitman to the AIDS crisis. Ian Young's "The Stonewall Experiment" should be required reading for all young gay men who are wondering what the gay "community" is and where it has been. This study examines the self-images. Additionally, every single solitary gay activist, and gay "leader" should read this book. The dissident story has been told many times, by many people, but seldom with such grace, compassion, and literary sense. Young is an astute observer of behaviour and culture, and his insights transcend far beyond the HIV/AIDS debate. This is an important work in cultural history and social psychology.
