Horatio Alger, J. an author who lived among and for boys and himselfremained a boy in heart . Herbert’s face flushed. He was not ashamed of the patch, for he knewthat his mother’s poverty made it a necessity.

Horatio Alger, J. an author who lived among and for boys and himselfremained a boy in heart and association till death, was born at Revere,Mass. He was the son of a clergyman; was graduatedat Harvard College in 1852, and at its Divinity School in 1860; and waspastor of the Unitarian Church at Brewster, Mass.

Carter awaited Herbert’s return with interest. She felt lonelywithout him, for he had never before been away from home to stayovernight. But there was a feeling of anticipation besides. Her hopes ofa legacy were not very strong, but of course there was a possibility ofher uncle’s having remembered them in his will. Even if it is only five dollars, it will be welcome, she thought. Where people are so poor as we are, every little helps. She sat at her sewing when the stage stopped before the door.

My name is Herbert Carter. I was employed to read to your son. Have youheard from him? We are expecting a letter daily, but the distance is considerable, andwe may have to wait for some time yet. So you are Herbert Carter? Yes, sir. My son was very much interested in you. He has spoken often of you. He was very kind to me. Your father was an inventor. That was not his business, but he devoted his leisure to invention.

Horatio Alger Jr. published about 100 poems and odes, most written by 1875. In 1853–54, he published short stories with Gleason's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion and The Flag of Our Nation. Other Gleason publications printed about 100 stories before he began writing for Student and Schoolmate. Alger had many publishers over the decades. His first was A. K. Loring of Boston, and when Loring declared bankruptcy in 1881, Porter & Coates became his second and Henry T. Coates and Company his third.
