The Armenian Prayer Book of S. regory of NarekIncludes bibliography and notes. Saint Gregory of Narek (Grigor Narekatsi; 951 – 1003) was an Armenian monk, poet, mystical philosopher, theologian and saint of the Armenian Apostolic Church, born into a family of writers. Based in the monastery of Narek (Narekavank), he was Armenia’s first great poet. He is the author of mystical interpretation on the Song of Songs and numerous poetic writings.

Gregory of Narek was a saint, priest, mystic, composer, astronomer, theologian and poet, honored as the first poet of Armenia and revered by Armenians as a watchful angel in human form. He is now also a Doctor of the Church. St. Gregory was a leading light in the era of the Armenian cultural renaissance and a source of comfort and courage in the often grim centuries that followed his death in 1003. As Gregory wrote to God, In the face of my darkness, you are light. The Book of Lamentations is a collection of 95 prayers in 366 chapters intended to express the sighs of a broken and contrite heart in a way that might be pleasing to God.

Written shortly before the first millenium of Christianity, the prayers of St. Gregory of Narek, also known as the Book of Lamentations, have long been recognized as gems of Christian literature. St. Gregory called his book an "encyclopedia of prayer for all nations." It was his hope that it would serve as a guide to prayer for people of all stations around the world.

In 95 grace-filled prayers St. Gregory draws on the exquisite potential of the Classical Armenian language to translate the pure sighs of the broken and contrite heart into an offering of words pleasing to God. The result is an edifice of faith for the ages, unique in Christian literature for its rich imagery, its subtle theology, its Biblical erudition, and the sincere immediacy of its communication with God.

This excellent translation makes available to English readers one of the great spiritual poems in existence. Though the translation at time falls short of rendering the beauty, rhythm and density of Narek's work, it is nevertheless an important achievement. Very few works in literature can offer the kind of sublime experience afforded by reading Narek in the original Classical Armenian (called Krapar). Hundreds of years before the English language developed a mature prose, Narek drew upon the power and beauty of Classical Armenian to compose a lyrical work in free verse that is universal in poetic scope and theological depth. In the Book of Lamentations, Narek does more than craft beautiful poem prayers. He examines the human condition and offers profound meditations on the nature of existence and the Christian God. Each of Narek's poems are entitled "Speaking with God from the Depths of the Heart," and the concept of speech is central to the work. The Lamentations is a tour de force in Classical Armenian poetry: a never-ending, richly flowing word-song that mesmerizes and overwhelms the reader with the density and variety of its innumerable poetic images. It realizes the full potential of the excuisite language of Classical Armenian and elevates it to new aethetic heights. The idea of redemption through speech, of not only confession of mind and heart, but of self-examination and conscious, deliberate reflection, is one of the central themes of this work, a theme that English speakers can now explore with this still imperfect but nevertheless valuable translaction.

You can buy this classic text for $20.00 from St. Vartan Armenian Church bookstore in New york brand new. This is a classic and hardcover version. It is written by one of the Armenian Church Fathers. The work contains many prayers which are an expression of an Armenian Saint who was a monk and teacher at the monastery whose prayers were known for their healing effect on those who prayed them or for whom others prayed.

This is a great book for all Christians. What is great about it is that both English and Armenia versions are in one book. Defiantly 10+.
