JAMES ELPHINSTON Education in Four Books. James Elphinston (1721-1809) was an educationalist who established a school at Brompton in 1753. In 1763, the school was moved "to a site recently occupied by Baron Grant's Mansion" in Kensington, and Elphinston's Education became "an advertisement" for his new academy (see DNB). Cricket features in one plate, and references to it on pp. 52-53 convey the theme that competitive sport should be a part of education.
