Purestone
I bought this because I find many realms in Linguistic Anthropology to be fascinating. (I write software, I'm not a scholar.) The readings here were apparently commissioned for the purpose of this book, and are edited such that they can note each others existence in the book. In this sense, the book feels more integrated than it might. For the most part, I enjoyed the articles, and some were very enlightening. For me, some topics just are not as interesting; I read them, and got something out of them, but it was a slog at times. If you have an interest in this topic, I think you would find this a very good choice since so many areas are covered. No articles go too deep, and the writing generally very accessible. I have a good grasp as to the scope of the field now, and can dig deeper into the areas that I enjoy the most.

Anthropological Linguistics without jargon. This is a wonderful introduction to socio-linguistics for the common reader. Two dozen experts each tackle a major concept and explicate the issues in studying their various subjects. I think it would help to read a basic text first but this book provides real depth without threatening outsiders with "platt deutsch." This is the most stimulating book I have found this year. My head is swimming with new insights and with questions I want to pursue.
