Born in Northern Ireland, his birth certificate is stamped Lisburn Poor Law Institute, so he can really claim he was born in the work house. Being a repat in Bangkok I found the book factual, and amusing .A little dated in parts but still a good read.Particularly liked the chapter on Sangran .I experienced it before reading book and wondered what had hit me .Good job Ian

I purchased this book at the airport on my way out of Bangkok on a business trip earlier this year. Of the variety of books that I read before and after the trip, this is my favorite. In Thailand, Dr. Corness writes a column for the Pattaya Mail and this book is essentially a collection of newspaper columns. Don't expect a continuous story but rather a random assortment of articles. He has a quirky sense of humor that some people will love and others just won't understand.

Dr. Corness is a doctor and auto racing enthusiast. He is a Scot born in Northern Ireland who spent most of his life in Australia before moving to Thailand. He fell in love with Thailand as a tourist and eventually decided to move there where he married a Thai woman, purchased a home, and so on. I mention all of this because clearly he has had the opportunity to experience Thailand from a number of interesting perspectives and this book does a great job covering these perspectives.

One warning -- many people unfortunately associate Thailand with the country's sex industry and expect that when reading books about Thailand. There is much more to the country than this and you will be disappointed if you purchase this book expecting much about this industry. Dr. Corness does touch upon these topics in a few chapters (in an entertaining fashion) but not in any sort of level of detail.

This was a very enjoyable and helpful read. I would encourage anyone who is planning to move to Thailand to read this book as a pre-orientation to the culture and the Thai Ways. It is very helpful for foreigners (farangs) to understand more about Thailand. Having lived in Thailand already 5 years when I read it, it was also an enjoyable read for me to be able to identify with someone else who has experienced similar things.

Not quite as good and funny as Herriot. However, his love for Thailand oozes from every page. Only for true farangs...

If you are an invalid and have never been anywhere and want to read the impressions of a new expatriate living in Thailand this might be a book for you. It's a very gentle with nothing sexy. Suitable for all unless you are seeking something sexy.
I learned a life lesson from my experiences with this book.
That lesson is: If I am ever asked by an author if I have read his book, I have programmed myself to say "Yes!" or "I'll be happy to review it for you, if you will GIVE me a copy."
