Zen was introduced in the United States at the end of the 19th century by Japanese teachers who went to America to serve groups of Japanese immigrants and become acquainted with the American culture. Many years ago, after a friend leafed through this book, he began to practice zen. He said he could see and feel the essence of zen in the black and white photos of these masterpieces - especially the tea bowls. I have many books on "zen and art" and I have to say that I agree with what my friend saw and felt. This is the best book I've seen on zen art. The photos come as close as possible to convey the emptiness and the fullness of what can't be expressed.
