Very well-written overall, Hull's book covers nearly the entire history of the presence of Jewish communities in the African continent, explaining in rich detail how and why they migrated there, and how they struggled to make a life for themselves even as fortunes rose and fell over time under different rulers and constantly changing societies.

A fascinating account of a little-known aspect of Jewish and African history. Provides context for historic figures like Philo and Maimonides, the role of Jews in the trans-Saharan trade after the expulsion from Spain in 1492, and a rounded account of the many roles of Jews in South African history. Highly recommended.
