Colin Henry Wilson (26 June 1931 – 5 December 2013) was an English writer, philosopher and novelist. He also wrote widely on true crime, mysticism and the paranormal, eventually writing more than a hundred books.

Colin Henry Wilson (26 June 1931 – 5 December 2013) was an English writer, philosopher and novelist. Wilson called his philosophy "new existentialism" or "phenomenological existentialism", and maintained his life work was "that of a philosopher, and (his) purpose to create a new and optimistic existentialism".

Colin Wilson was one of the most prolific and insightful authors. This is not a factual study of the occult. Rather, pages and pages of pointless anecdotes. There really inst any point to the book. The author may be a good writer but he rambles on and on never getting to a point. Its like one of those cheap Alien TV shows that keep promising something shocking is coming but after each commercial they just recap what you already saw and make more promises, eventually coming to none. The book references other books and in that way may be a useful reference for those seeking material.

Colin Wilson’s classic work is an essential guide to the mind-expanding experiences and discoveries of the occult in the 20th century. The result is a wide-ranging survey of the subject that provides Colin Wilson’s classic work is an essential guide to the mind-expanding experiences and discoveries of the occult in the 20th century.

Colin Wilson is one of the most prolific, versatile and popular writers at work today. Since then he has written many books on philosophy, the occult, crime and sexual deviance, plus a host of successful novels which have won him an international reputation. He was born in Leicester in 1931, and left school at sixteen. After he had spent years working in a wool warehouse, a laboratory, a plastics factory and a coffee bar his first book The Outsider was published in 1956. His work has been translated into Spanish, French, Swedish, Dutch, Japanese, German, Italian, Portuguese, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish and Hebrew.

It is with such experience that this book is concerned. Civilisation cannot evolve further until 'the occult' is taken for granted on the same level as atomic energy. Faust's longing for the 'occult' is the instinctive desire to believe in the unseen forces, the wider significances, that can break the circuit. The interesting thing is that Western man developed science and philosophy because of this consuming passion for wider significances. I do not mean that scientists ought to spend their evenings with an ouija board, or that every university should set up a 'department of psychic sciences' along the lines of the Rhine Institute at Duke.
