I deeply appreciated the Christian based material in this book, but was shocked that the author equates the Bible with the Quran, both as holy books from God. The Quran teaches that Christ did not die (therefore did not atone for our sins), Christ did not rise from the dead (thus proving His divine power and victory over death and Satan) and that Jesus was a mere man although a prophet (rather than God in human flesh). If the author does not realize this insurmountable conflict between Christian faith and Islam, then I question her judgment in other areas. It seems to me the author has compromised her faith with this teaching and I was disappointed with this aspect of her book.

I am completely new to the practice of Lectio Divina. After reading this book, I feel confident in including it into my own life and practice. Loved the book, the writing, presentation, tips, and style. I am not Catholic, nor am I an Oblate, and still this book "spoke" to me. The author connects the historical view of prayer to the monastic view to the modern practice. Whether one is Jewish, Christian, or Pagan, they will gain a lot by reading this book. This practice could be used to explore any vital book, not just the Bible and the author shows you how.

Lectio Divina is a worthwhile practice, making scriptures come alive again. Too often, reading the scripture becomes rote or boring, but practicing Lectio Divina can make the scriptures relevant and highly personal. Although some might be offended by the author's definition of "sacred text," there is enough in this book to help a pilgrim on his/her journey, and inspire a closer walk with God--both through the reading of scripture, and in everyday tasks, as well. The practice of Lectio Divina can be applied on a personal, small group, or even congregational level. It is all about God's message, living authentically, and being present in the moment. As a long-time director of music and worship arts, I urge you to try this spiritual exercise and I recommend this book to you. Even though this is an ancient monastic practice, you might just find yourself thinking outside the box!

Dr. Christine Valters Paintner beautifully summarizes the heart of Lectio Divina in this book. She offers various methods and suggested texts (as well as poetry, music, art, and objects) for practicing Lectio, along with ample encouragement to try this ancient form of heart-centered prayer. I've used her methods with several small groups. Christine's explorations with Lectio are accessible for the beginner and useful for the more experienced practitioner. Highly recommended!

I love this book! One can grow significantly by using this method of spiritual reading, not only scripture, but all forms of literature and art. I gave this book to a beloved grand daughter when she was confirmed. The method takes practice, but is not overly burdensome. So happy to have discovered it!

This is a great guide into the practice of Lectio Divina. Lectio is a much need practice of reading scripture that allows us to hear God's voice speaking personally to us.

Good "how to" book on Lectio Divina
Simple, clear, taking the best of many religious thoughts on prayer...to another level...directly to the heart... beautifully written, easy to read...and opens the heart to listening deep within. I loved it.
