Series: Zebra Regency Romance. Mass Market Paperback: 350 pages. Publisher: Zebra (February 1, 1993). It's an enjoyable read.

Series: Zebra Regency Romance. Based on the cover's description, I had expected more romance and intrigue, but it's a very tame story with a variety of characters. Not very believable, mind you, but has a lot of descriptions of what life in Regency London would have been like. The ending is absolutely ridiculous, but makes me smile every time I read it. Would be a fun movie to watch.

Yes, the denouement was perfectly ridiculous, but I didn't object to the complex plotting or the multitude of love interests (save one which I'll speak of later). Thoroughly entertaining Regency romp. My only caveat was that Warwick and Claudia's other suitors were a bit underdone. However, The women and the younger men are classics in the best sense.

There is not one jot of romance in this book. I'm not exaggerating. The hero doesn't even give the heroine a second thought before about page 300. And the heroine doesn't do much better. They spend most of the book with other characters and when they are together they're almost always at daggers drawn.

In addition, they're both quite colourless. The other characters and relationships in the book are better fleshed-out and are more interesting. The "intrigue" part of the plot meanders on and on, and is forgotten for long stretches of time although the matter is supposedly very urgent.

The writing is passable and it didn't kill me to read the whole thing, but I did so in a state of disbelief that anyone could miss the mark so badly.

Would be a fun movie to watch. I picked it up from where it was left on a table at work at least 8 years ago, took it home, and have reread it several times when I need something light. Not a masterpiece by any means, but fun.

This is one of my favorite Anthea Malcolm books. The heroine is smart, resourceful, and unusual. The characters come to life, and the denouement makes sense. In addition, the book is definitely written with Malcolm's usual sense of humor. I strongly recommend it.
