From the very moment that she’d met Ewan, nothing had gone according to plan or expectations. From her plan to sneak him out of the castle to her expectations of the man himself. From her plan to sneak him out of the castle to her expectations of the man himself, she hadn’t expected him to be so harsh and angry-nor so overwhelmingly appealing, so overpoweringl. ensual. Nay, this was a far different Ewan than she recalled as a lassie. He was towering over her now in the moonlight, a tall man of proud bearing, built of pure muscle and with guarded blue eyes that impaled her own. And it was obvious that he didn’t believe a word of her story.

(Scotland, 1478) Ruan MacLeod was through with women. They were nothing but trouble.Leaving the rash life of his youth behind, he returned to Skye, seeking peace. He never meant to split the clan or start a war with the MacDonald of Duntulm. He certainly never foresaw an arranged marriage to the most scandalous woman in Scotland. Even though she was twice his age, the size of a horse and mother to more than one illegitimate child, he agreed to secure his sister's freedom. However, even that plan goes drastically awry. On his wedding day, he finds himself faced instead with an enticing, green-eyed lass named Bree. A walking disaster, his bride immediately turns his world into chaos and threatens to melt his resolve never to love again.Betrayed by her own mother, Bree flees to Skye, thinking only to reunite with her long, lost father. Instead, she finds herself wed to Ruan MacLeod as a replacement bride. When she is forced to remain in the castle, she is soon caught between brothers and the mentally ill wife of the laird.Shy, yet strong, Bree embarks on a journey of independence and learns along the way that all men are not necessarily evil. In fact, one particularly brooding, yet gentle-hearted warrior is worthy of love, and she soon loses her heart forever.(Approximately 90,800 words - about 450 pages of an 8 X 5 paperback size)We hope you will enjoy this edited second edition even more than this first!

Surprising. Not quite what I imagined for some reason. I really enjoyed it!

The characters were headstrong and enjoyable in their inability to communicate clearly with each other. But in the end love wins! Through all the trials.

And this book is clean for a highlander romance. There are heated kisses and desire, but no explicit sex scenes. Which was so refreshing! Just enough lust to satisfy without giving all the dirty details.

I'm off to read the next book in the series!

THE KINDLING HEART - CARMEN CAINE
#1 THE HIGHLAND HEATHER AND HEARTS SCOTTISH ROMANCE SERIES.

THE KINDLING HEART is a wonderful start to THE HIGHLAND HEATHER AND HEARTS SCOTTISH ROMANCE Series. Carmen Caine has started this series with story full of intrigue, adventure, danger and romance.

Bree didn’t understand! What had she done now? It wasn’t unusual for her stepfather to be angry with her, but why was he calling her “whore, harlot”? She knew it would lead to another beating while her mother looked the other way.

To avoid an arranged marriage, Bree is convinced by her friend Afraig, to leave with Bree’s long, lost father, Domnall. On the journey to his home, she begins to like him, to trust him. Believing he wants her to be with him. Just as she is feeling safe, her father marries her to Ruan.

Ruan has returned to Skye to seek peace. Peace from the follies of his youth. Even though he was fostered out when he was younger, his heart has always been in Skye. Having to endure the bad blood between him, his brothers and Tormod, his oldest brother and Laird of the clan, he still returned. The strong desire to protect his sister Merry, was foremost in his mind. He hadn’t intended to divide the clan. But because of Tormod, marrying off Merry to an enemy clan, Ruan divided the clan by rescuing her from her abusive husband. He could not leave Merry in the hands of his enemy, she was less than 10 years old, too young to wed. In retaliation of going against him, Tormod arranges a marriage for Ruan. Not just a marriage, but to the most scandalous woman in Scotland. She is twice his age, big as a horse and has many illegitimate children. In order to secure Merry’s safety, Ruan agrees to the mariage. What does he care? He has no plans to ever have a wife and he can be gone, never having to even see her. He long ago decided he was through with women.

Domnell and Bree arrive on Ruan’s wedding day. To Ruan’s surprise, his bride has changed to a green-eyed beauty, not at all what he was expecting. His contracted bride died and Domnell decided that Ruan would be a good husband for Bree. That’s why she took the place of the contracted bride. Once more Bree feels betrayed. Even if her father says he has her best interest in mind,

The marriage starts out with conflict. Ruan doesn’t want a wife. Bree is filled with anger, not trusting another man ever again. But marriage is the least of their troubles.

From the start of the marriage, THE KINDLING HEART only weaves more of an intriguing story. Attempts on Ruan’s life, without him knowing why, the jealous, crazy Laird wife attacking Bree, leers from Tormad toward Bree and jealousy of Merry towards Bree. For the safety of them, all Ruan decides to travel to his foster home. Will the three of them arrive alive? While traveling, will Ruan and Bree finally learn to trust each other? Or once they are safe, will they each go their own way?

Carmen has written a book full of mysterious twists and turns. There are so many facets to this book. I loved going from one dangerous situation to another, all the while wondering how it would end. THE KINDLING HEART is an emotional journey that I would not miss. I look forward to reading more of her books in this series.

I waited until I read all the books in this series before posting reviews. This, the first of four was my least favorite. I thought the hero's sister was an annoying brat and she really got on my nerves (I'm happy to say she improved with age). Ruan and Bree's love story was also a bit convoluted. It wasn't a bad read but I'm glad I only paid 99¢ for it. I did think the series improved with the other books.

I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to read this book and I did get all the other books from Ms. Carmen Caine from the highland heather and hearts series Scottish romance series but for some reason I have refrained from reading this book. Maybe perhaps it is the cover of the book when in the other covers I can just see part of the guy’s face which I really like the mystery of not knowing totally what they look like and this one I can see his whole face which I much prefer the mystery. So I guess I pre-judged this book already which was a stupid thing to do.
The story is a good clean one with great lively characters and filled with a ton of action which made it hard to put the book down! I am quite happy that there is no described sexual copulations between the hero and heroine instead being implied which isn’t to say there is no heat between the characters and this does leave a lot to the imagination. The handsome loyal half-brother of the laird hero Ruan after saving his sister from a hellacious physically abusive brute of a husband is betrothed by his brother the current laird of MacLeod to an older large pregnant widow to seal an alliance of clans. Unfortunately due to her untimely demise Ruan ends up with the stubborn, also physically abusive quiet, mysterious, pretty heroine Bree. Their relationship is filled with all sorts of trials, tribulations, family squabbles, kidnapping, and intrigue which continually pull at their relationship. Bree is just a fighter she fights against her step-father, mother, her real dad, and Ruan just pretty much everyone which at times was a little bit tedious especially when she fights Ruan a lot of the time but I admired her spirit and just loved her. Ruan is just the perfect match for Bree despite the sometimes physical assault he deals with I sometimes wondered why Ruan would stay with Bree when all she does is fight him almost the whole time.
I really enjoyed the way Ms. Caine can tell a story and really shouldn’t have judged this book by the cover alone. Despite the claimer that this is Ms. Caine’s first book she ever wrote the history is different than the others in the series it still is a wonderful book. I did however rate the book four stars not just for the cover but the fact that Bree fights Ruan constantly making me think that maybe she should have ended up with someone else? I did still purchase plus will read the rest in the series and will get other works from Ms. Caine as well.
