I simply loved this book. I forced myself to stop reading because I was in serious danger of finishing it in one sitting and I wanted the experience to last. I couldn't put it down for long, though, because I finished it in less than two days. It made me cry, it made me happy, it made me think about my own horses (and dogs), it made me think about what I'm doing and not doing to improve this world, and it made me rethink how I treat my own animals. Of course, I would recommend this to my horse friends, but I would also recommend it to anyone who needs to be encouraged that there are still good people doing good things in this world. The stories are entertaining, heartbreaking, and heartwarming.

Melanie is an amazing woman doing amazing things, but more than that, her outlook despite the horrors she sees first hand, is remarkable. She doesn't presume to judge a soul - equine or human. She simply takes care of the creatures that cross her path. I think Mother Teresa said something to that effect, also. It's so true - if we just cared for the animals (and people) that are put in our own path, this world would be infinitably better.

Beautiful book. Beautiful writing. Beautiful person. I can't wait to read her other books.

I am in awe of Melanie Sue Bowles' devotion and grace. Her generous spirit gives readers the strength to see beyond the pain of abuse to healing for these beautiful horses. As a reader and a human being living on this earth, I am deeply thankful for what Bowles does on behalf of all living beings. She brings a greater wisdom to anyone willing to listen and certainly to anyone reading these moving stories, which told simply and directly, and with enormous heart, are powerful teachings that can be read and read again. Keep it by your favorite reading perch. These true tales are timeless.

"My father was an adamant proponent of John Donne's 'No Man Is An Island' philosophy, and that is the way I was raised. One of the most life-altering lessons that I learned from both my mother and father is that it's possible to attain higher levels of happiness, feelings of self-worth, and a genuine sense of accomplishment if we take the focus off ourselves. Whatever we choose to be passionate about, we need to remember that in one form or another, we are either taking from or giving back to the world around us. No man is an island.
Perhaps when we consciously try to conduct our lives in the spirit of giving back to the world, the gift of happiness, a feeling of self-worth, and a sense of accomplishment are simply there . . . We do not have to seek them."

The above is a, slightly edited for length, excerpt from the introduction of The Horses of Proud Spirit. I'd like to share my thoughts on this book here on Amazon because Melanie is a rare gem among us. I've carried a page for Mel on my own site for so long, and just discovered that I'd neglected to share it here.

Mel is one that doesn't just tout a philosophy, she lives it. Proud Spirit started on fifty acres in Myacca City, Florida and now spans 300 plus acres in Mena, Arkansas. All the horses were moved in special tractor/trailer rigs when the larger facility was procurred. It is the living proof of the heart and soul of a gentle woman, passionate about giving back to the Earth a small portion of what we all take from it.

I've witnessed with my own eyes, these glorious creatures that without her, would have met with yet more abuse or death. I've seen her work with them, care for them, and most gratifying of all, I've seen the love and trust in their incredible eyes when she enters a pasture and they come loping up to greet her. A trust she gave of her all to earn against nearly insurmountable odds.

In addition to their tireless work with the horses, Melanie and her husband Jim, both retired with full service from the Sarasota County Fire Department where Jim was a Battalion Chief. In this world fraught with trial and tribulation, man's inhumanity to man and beast, such folks as Melanie and Jim deserve acknowledgment. I am humbled to know them, and honored to call them 'family'.

I shun any tendencies toward commercialism when it comes to things of Spirit. In this instance, however, I urge all who may read this page to acquire this book for yourselves and anyone on your gift list who appreciates the love that can be shared between man and an animal. Your Spirit will thank you. So will the horses, as all profits go to them.

I cried, I laughed, I cringed, I felt my heart overflowing with love and appreciation for Melanie Sue Bowles, the owner of Proud Spirit, and author of this book. This is a gal who learned from the bottom up how to master the language of horses. Simply by observing their behavior and using sound human instincts, she has been able to provide a peaceful home for horses who have been abused beyond what one would imagine possible. What a loving heart and caring soul! This intelligent, brave woman is never afraid to step out of the box to conquer the fears of these equine creatures and provide them with the love, freedom and peaceful passages they deserve. Thi is a book I will remember for a long, long time.

I enjoyed reading this book from cover to cover in just one day. The author is an amazing story teller and an awesome writer. LOVED the stores of each horse + the insights into the spirituality of horses and the good and evil that comes into our lives. The author has obviously transformed evil into good and more importantly--focused that good on making a difference--most importantly on the lives of horses.

You cannot read this book and not be impressed...or cry...or want to make a difference in the world as well. Thanks for all that you do.

Beautifully written essays about some of the beloved horses rescued and now living out their lives at Proud Spirit Horse Sanctuary with the sanctuary owners, Melanie and Jim and their pack of also rescued dogs. Oh, and don't let me forget the pigs. It is easy to read and the short segments of the essays meant I didn't need an expanded amount of leisurely time to read I could relax and enjoy during briefs moments of peace. Combined with Hoof Prints: More Stories of Proud Spirit and Dogs of Proud Spirit the reader can vicariously enjoy and sense the love this couple has for animals.
