The magic of Shorebirds of North America, Europe, and Asia lies in how the procession of northern hemisphere shorebirds plays out, a continuum that blends American into European into Asian species until at last one understands the bigger picture of birds of the shore. Chandler's book incorporates outstanding photographs of each species in most of their plumages. His text is quite detailed and scientific. Because the author is a world authority on shorebirds, I eagerly awaited this latest addition to my shorebird library.

Shorebirds of North America, Europe, and Asia: A Photographic Guide by Richard Chandler is an excellent addition to any shorebirder’s library. With only 217 species worldwide, shorebirds are not paragons of diversity. Anyway, Shorebirds of North America, Europe, and Asia acquits itself rather well in this regard.

Hybridisation in shorebirds has been proven on only a small number of occasions; however, many individual shorebirds have been recorded by birdwatchers worldwide that do not fit the characters of known species. Many of these have been suspected of being hybrids. In several cases, shorebird hybrids have been described as new species before their hybrid origin was discovered.

I just received this and must say that I am very pleased with it. It has great photos and detailed information about each bird. Like most guides, it has more photos of some birds than others, but is careful to provide photos for each plumage. Too big & heavy to be considered a true portable field guide, but an awesome reference book, especially in combination with "The Shorebird Guide" by Crossley, Karlson, & O'Brien. Absolutely worth the money! Now if some of those European or Asian shorebirds would fly to the Dallas/Ft Worth area.....!

Wow, What a great book on all the shorebirds of the world! A must have for any one who loves these birds. Using it has helped me with a lot of confusing I.D.'s...especially with the "ringed" plovers.
