Helps one to understand dog thinking/feeling/needs at whatever stage of life. Good advice and practical information. Ever wonder why little dogs tend to get growly/snappy/grouchy in old age? This book had the answer.

I expected a book that gave more milestones and critical periods in a dog's life, how to care for older dogs, when dogs learn what. I was looking for a more practical understanding of a dog's day by day lifespan and how to accommodate her needs, emotions and intellect at each stage. What I got was yet another book on training based on dominance.

Although there is some good information in this book, dominance has been drastically reduced in importance in modern training, The bit of insight into the way my dog's mind works regarding other dogs was worth the read, however.

even though i knew much of what was entailed in this one. it would be fairly close to comprehensive for a beginner and still lots of good advice for those who know much more.

This is a great companion book to Jan Fennell's "The Dog Listener" and gives great suggestions on how to care for one's dog throughout its life.

An up and coming trend in dog training and behavior is the redefinition of Alpha (see studies done by David L. Mech) and the use of positive re-enforcement type techniques. This book does NOT keep up with those.

In terms of defining life stages, it is interesting, however the training style is not something I would use. I prefer those of Jean Donaldson, Patricia B. McConnell, and Karen Pryor.

I own lots of information books about dogs, and this was a good addition to my collection. I enjoyed reading this book.

This is the second book that I have from this author about dogs. It's a very good book.
I’ve got to say it: This is a good book, but it is difficult to read the print on the gray-tone, special interest pages. Adding to this are the black and white photos, which are difficult to view, especially on the gray-tone pages.

This book needs to be reprinted, with the gray-tone pages replaced with a light-pastel shade and with color photos.

The layout is good, and so is the content.

The book has black and white photos, information boxes and tables.

This 2005 is a hard-cover book with dust jacket.

The author is Jan Fennell.

The publisher is HarperCollins Publishers Ltd., NYC.

The book has 7 main sections.

Following that is: Contacts in the US, Contacts in the UK, Other Contacts/ Kennel Clubs and the Index.

However, 1 section that is a standard book section is missing, the Bibliography. This section is especially valuable to readers who are new to a topic. As such, the Bibliography should offer good examples of: magazines, books, films, videos, web sites, etc.

As a dog owner, my library is filled with all sorts of books on dogs. This is a good book describing all of the main stages of a dog’s life.
