Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) is concerned with all aspects of the process of designing, prototyping, manufacturing, inspecting, and maintaining complex geometric objects under computer control. As such, there is a natural synergy between this field and Computational Geometry (CG), which involves the design, analysis, implementation, and testing of efficient algorithms and data representation techniques for geometric entities such as points, polygons, polyhedra, curves, and surfaces. The DIMACS Center (Piscataway, NJ) sponsored a workshop to further promote the interaction.

Geometric and algorithmic aspects of computer-aided design and manufacturing. In the design of a computer for executing a family of algorithms in the new large-scale integration (LSI) technology, each particular implementation is embodied in a series of ″chips″ which are particular realizations of various portions of the hardware realization of the overall design. The difficulty presented in a LSI implementation is that each of the chips is different.

For example, the geometric model of a design may be developed to include material and manufacturing information that can later be used in computer-aided process planning and manufacturing (CAPP/CAM) activities. A geometric model is also a must for any engineering analysis, such as finite elopement analysis (FEA).
