I have (for reasons of completing requirements) taken 3 different sociology classes for credit. Of the three classes I have taken and the texts used for them, this particular one was the best written. It has some good definitions, easy-to-read chapters, more respectable for students to read (it doesn't have a "talk down on them" feel to the writing), and is fairly updated with information that may have changed since the earlier editions. Sullivan has written a good book, and that is why I give it 4 stars.

With the good does come some negatives, but they are slight: 1) Sullivan's definitions of terms seem to be oversimplified, sometimes; 2) Graphs are used by Sullivan to support his writing, but many of the graphs are not telling the entire story, nor do they really break-down into their elements; 3) There is oodles of other writing out in the realm of sociology that Sullivan doesn't even touch, some of which can debunk what Sullivan writes about (for example, queer theory, population and the inverted pyramid models, studies on LDCs (lesser developed countries/"third world" models). This is probably the case because it works as an lower-level college course text, and those particular elements are for the more advanced classes, but Sullivan still doesn't even mention them.

4 of 5 stars. It works for 100-level college courses as an introduction (that's why the title says "Introduction to...") and easy-to-read.

I dont think that this book was very easy to read and understand. It almost seems like you need to understand the information prior to reading this book, but if you do then it makes sense. Would recommend this textbook if you have some background knowledge-then it is great, but if you do not know much about sociology, it might be hard to understand.

I have the book for my social problems class and it does what it needs to do, give me more visual concepts to what I need.

Had to have this book for a course of the same name as the book. It does a good job of presenting the material and facts without an outright bias or political leaning. Overall, interesting and not as dull as a standard textbook.
