Drawing on their decades of teaching experience, William Briggs and Lyle Cochran have created a calculus text that carries the teacher's voice beyond the classroom. That voice-evident in the narrative, the figures, and the questions interspersed in the narrative-is a master teacher leading readers to deeper levels of understanding. This book is an expanded version of Calculus: Early Transcendentals by the same authors, with an entire chapter devoted to differential equations, additional sections on other topics, and additional exercises in most sections.

Briggs/Cochran is the most successful new calculus series published in the last two decades. The authors’ years of teaching experience resulted in a text that reflects how students generally use a textbook: they start in the exercises and refer back to the narrative for help as needed. The text therefore builds from a foundation of meticulously crafted exercise sets, then draws students into the narrative through writing that reflects the voice of the instructor, examples that are stepped out and thoughtfully annotated, and figures that are designed to teach rather than simply supplement the narrative. The authors appeal to students’ geometric intuition to introduce fundamental concepts, laying a foundation for the rigorous development that follows.

My school used the Stewart calculus book/series for the first of three semesters of course work. I took some time off from school after the first semester and they switched books on me. Normally, the price of another expensive and heavy math book would bother me, but in this case, I find the examples and explanations in the Briggs book far easier to understand. I am lucky that I can trade off reading difficult to understand examples between the two books, but I honestly grasp more from the Briggs book. I really like math; however, it is not an easy subject for me. I am not the person who just gets it. I need careful explanation and lots of practice with homework problems represented by the examples given. Don't get me wrong, the homework is still challenging and requires thinking outside of and beyond the examples. I just feel that this Briggs book gives me a fair chance to get through the homework and it isn't just a bunch of equations that look completely daunting. It is readable and overall, I'm very happy with this book.

Not commenting on the quality of the content, but on the textbook itself. I took a summer course that lasted 2 months. Sad to say this book didn't last the entire two months. The pages at the end fell out of the book binding. At first it was just a large chunk bound together, but then that too broke down and now im surrounded by a dozen pages of a textbook I have to figure out how to repair. Not satisfied at all.

Product did not include the software as advertised.

Received the book about 1 week after school started. Love this book, it is clear and easy to read. Not inundated with examples that put you to sleep. The examples given are to the point and the units are short making absorbing the contents easier. Would like to see the publisher put up a website with solutions to problems.

product was torn at the back where the answers were and the book was overall beat up

The book came with a large section of the pages coming out of the binding. As long as I don't get charged extra for returning a broken book, this will work out just fine.

Some of the back of the book was falling out, like as if the glue dried but didn't get those few pages. But other than that, the book was good as new.
Book was glued together. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. in bad condition.
