Rybczynski covers how cultures interact with technology as it evolves and disrupts. His approach is mostly historical and covers a lot of ground. The author is a master of the appropriate example -- for instance, his history of how societies have responded to the introduction of buttons on clothing is fascinating and is alone worth the price of the book. He also discusses several societies that tried to roll back technological change completely, with horrific consequences in every case. There's no one single message, but what I took away was that every culture has its own identity and deals with new technology in its own way. This fact gives us hope for not being overwhelmed as technology continues to evolve.

The book was written shortly before the most recent massively-disruptive change, the internet, arrived on the scene (could Rybczynski have imagined that newspapers, which he discusses as a powerful force, would soon be fighting for survival?). Yet the content of the book stands up well, and in fact it is rather interesting to see how a thoughtful scholar viewed the future in 1983.
