The author, in a very personal style, draws a clear distinction between selecting people for your life because you want to help them, and selecting people for your life because they are great people who can be mutually supportive, great friends, companions, business associates, and more. Lillian Glass gives a very clear, well written list of multiple types of 'terrific people' and how you can identify them - something many people need to learn how to recognize. And she gives some very sound advice about what to do when people you thought were 'terrific' turn out not to be.

This book is unrelentingly positive in outlook, which apparently annoys some of its previous reviewers. Hey, you can't please everyone, and why would you try? That's one of the messages in this book.

People who are looking for a 1-2-3 procedure for meeting 'terrific people' -- as in, "First, say this. Then, look for that. Then add up the score," etc., will definitely be disappointed. It offers a more advanced strategy than that, despite its somewhat 'Hollywood' appearance.

The book is particularly instructive for 'people pleasers' (aka, co-dependents) who have had the very bad habit of selecting friends based on whether they could help the friends, or on whether they could prove themselves worthy by trying to please them. The author, in a very personal style, draws a clear distinction between selecting people for your life because you want to help them, and selecting people for your life because they are great people who can be mutually supportive, great friends, companions, business associates, and more.

Lillian Glass gives a very clear, well written list of multiple types of 'terrific people' and how you can identify them -- something many people need to learn how to recognize. And she gives some very sound advice about what to do when people you thought were 'terrific' turn out not to be.

I would only give this book four stars due to its light presentation and easy reading, but the soundness of its advice, from which I've learned one or two valuable lessons, merits five. I read it several years ago, and it has survived several prunings of my library, with good reason.

If you're ready to give up selecting toxic people and being victimized, by all means buy this book! If you're cynically out to prove that you already know everything and require someone to provide you with step-by-step, manipulative instructions for reeling in the kind of people you desire, look somewhere else.

A good companion book is Glass's "Toxic People." Both are well worth reading and remembering.

When I was considering to buy this book, I read the criticial reviews of this book, but I bought it and I am GLAD I did! I've had my share (and then some) of experiences with toxic people in general, but not much out there about how to have GOOD people in your life. I needed the information she shares in this book...

Have not gotten through the entire book yet, but seems as thought it is going to be an interesting read

Great book for understanding when you run into or meet or even deal with terrific people in your own life.

People seem to either love or hate this book. I confess to being in the latter group. I like to keep reviews as short as possible yet still help the potential reader decide. So here is what I regard as a deal-breaking short quote from the book.

"Smile to yourself for no reason at all." (p. 159)

If that quote makes sense to you, buy the book. If, however, you find it incomprehensible that a former professor at U.C.L.A., who holds a Ph.D. and post doctorate, could write it, then you'll probably agree with me that she has strayed far from her core competence during her media career. But you have to admire her real talent - building a celebrity media career without anyone finding out she is an empty shell.

Finally, let me tell you why you don't need this book. YOU are a terrific person, just lacking a little confidence as I was when I bought the book 15 years ago. This book won't give you confidence. INSTEAD - 1. Build your confidence by improving your skills at what you like doing. The gratification that comes from real competence will make you glow with attractiveness. (IF YOU ALSO) 2. Explore any niggling emotional issues you have. These destroy confidence like nothing else, and they are so woven into your life that it's hard to pinpoint how they do it. If they scare you or upset you, don't turn away. Dig deeper. When they are gone (it will take time) you won't believe what a people magnet you have become.

Heard ATTRACTING TERRIFIC PEOPLE--written and read
by Dr. Lillian Glass.

Glass, a media personality and communication specialist, talks about
the fact that if you want good people in your life, you have to be
one yourself . . . she suggests that you think about five people
you admire or respect . . then list the positive characteristics
that best describe their personality; e.g., accepting, alive, balanced,
caring, generous, joyous, passionate, etc. . . then seek other
people with these same characteristics.

Another idea that I liked was the following: Use compliments as
perfect icebreakers. For instance, tell somebody, "You look great
in that dress. Where's you get it?"

Glass also stressed the need to:

* Visualize the people you want to be around you.

* Utilize the Spiral of Friendship. Always share terrific people
you know with others.

* Don't negative to negative people.

* Treat the ones you love better than anybody else in the world.

* Learn one new thing each day.

* Always want the best for others.

My enjoyment of ATTRACTING TERRIFIC PEOPLE was enhanced
by the author's enthusiastic and absolutely terrific narration.
I've read a few negative reviews from customers here on Amazon complaining that Ms. Glass never tells you how to actually attract terrific people. I think the problem is that Lillian's solution is so simple that they miss the point. The fact that they took the time to trash someone's book should suggest that they might need to read it again.
It's full of great advice that should be "common sense" but as we all know it is not that common. She didn't strike me as snobby either. Its frankly one of the audio books that I am "suggesting" that all my employees listen to with the statement: "If I thought you needed this, I would not have hired you, but listen to it anyway." I think books like this are far more valuable than any sexual harassment seminar.
