Kind of a basics sort of a book, not much detail. Good for a beginner, but not the best. Encyclopedia of Philosophy in the public library has just as much. Only plus is putting the particular philosophers into perspective overall regarding their own periods in philosophy.

A wise man once wrote that the good teacher is one who can reveal the greatness in the simple things and the simple basics in the most complex of things. Dr. Kenneth Shouler does just that ith is "Everything Guide to Understanding Philosophy." I wish I had this book available several years ago when I taught philosophy students at universities and colleges. With a breezy style of writing, Shouler relates to the modern world the heart and core of the contributions of the giants in the field of philosophy. In short, he makes the subject live for students. Indeed, it's a most valuable tool for any teacher or professor in the field. A must read.

I was using it to help me understand "A Short History of Philosophy" and it did a good job of clarifying some salient points but it did not cover all the philosophers I needed to answer my homework questions. Overall, a great book for a newcomer to philosophy.
While I liked the book i'm puzzled by the author dedicating SIX pages to Richard Dawkins! I mean really, of all the people covered in this book this seems quite disproportionate to his stature, and influence. Also, there's not a SINGLE paragraph about Nietzsche! This is either the fault of the editor, or (in both instances) it's the author's own personal bias on display.
