Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1974. here in helpful tables that compare ‘Early Greek’ and a composite of 69 ‘Modern Hollywood’ Apollos and 72 Venuses; their statistics ‘measurement for measurement’ equating flesh with marble, with just a half-inch deviation here and there to show that their figures are slightly more streamlined for the age of Art Deco.
Juliet du Boulay analyses poignant moment in the last days of a traditional village. Few will match eloquence and perception. -Peter Loisos in The Times Educational Supplement. She returned to England to study social anthropology at Oxford, after which in the period between 1966-1973 she lived chiefly in a mountain village of northern Evia, at first collecting material on the customs and institutions of the village, and then paying especial attention to the people's cosmological and religious ideas.

Miss du Boulay has called her book 'Portrait of a Greek Mountain Village', and that is an honourable title and it has been honourably fulfilled. The scrupulous compilation of data aside, one does feel that one has experienced through her writing the life of Amb~li. Whether social anthropology as a science of man and society has been advanced is a question which now, in all fairness, must be directed towards the ethnographic tradition as a whole, not towards Miss du Boulay.
