VERY good, detailed book of the double murder of George Moscone and Harvey Milk by Dan White. Must read, it really takes you back to 1970s San Francisco. The only good book I know on this topic.

Definitely recommend.

Though this is a big, heavy book I raced through reading it. It's extremely well-written, as it should be since the author is a journalist, and it gave me lots of detail I didn't previously know from the 1978 assassinations. I think the author bent over backwards to be objective but should have tipped his hand a little bit more, as he did in the DVD that accompanies the book and on a recent booksigning on CSPAN/BookTV. He attended the trial so he focuses on that in detail and I would have liked to have seen more detail about the riot in S.F. after the minimal sentence murderer Dan White received. Overall I loved the book and could have kept reading for an extra 200 - 300 pages.

Great book Even more detail than original version. I worked in SF and knew many of the involved people. This is as close to the true story as possible with all the political crud surrounding it.

I remember when Dan White murdered San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk. I was only 16 years old and lived a couple of thousand miles away, but I remember at the time how bizarre it seemed. I remember when Dan White was tried and we all heard about the "Twinkie Defense." And the resurgent interest in Harvey Milk and Sen. Dianne Feinstein's long political career which is still continuing make it an interesting topic today.

I saw an article about the book on the Internet somewhere so I looked it up on Amazon and ordered this book and could not put it down once I started reading!

The author does a nice job of describing the backgrounds of the major players - Moscone, Milk & White. I think the author knew it was essential to understand the backgrounds of the major players and the politics in the City in order to understand White's crime and the resulting fallout, which is still being felt in California and all across the country.

I really enjoyed the part of the book that covered Dan White's trial. I love trial stories, and this one was quite a read. I learned that the "Twinkie Defense" was not a "Twinkie Defense" at all - not even close. It's amazing how a term can stick to a story, no matter how false it is.

As an attorney myself, I can certainly appreciate the efforts of the defense team, who performed, in my opinion, remarkably, considering the circumstances and the times and the setting and the ill will in the community on both sides.

What I really enjoyed was the enclosed DVD that had video interviews with Mayor Moscone and Dan White as well as 911 calls after the killings. It made the book that much more enjoyable and real.

I bet your feelings about the case will change after reading this book, one way or another. Mine sure did. I think that's a sign of a well-written insightful book which is not just a regurgitation of newspaper and media coverage of the event, as so many true-crime books are.

What a great book for summer reading!

Mike Weiss covered this story as a reporter, so he knows it inside and out. What raises this book above the level of the true-crime genre is the author's ability to place a singular tragedy within the context of a certain time and place. San Francisco in the late 70s was a volatile stew of internecine conflict, both politically and socially. Even of you were here, its hard to believe it happened. This book tells you why...

FIRST OF ALL ; I WAS A RESIDENT OF SAN FRANCISCO
FROM JUNE OF 1971 TO NOVEMBER OF 1980.SO I AM
WELL AWARE OF THIS INCINDENT, AND ITS AFTERMAth
ALSO, I WAS FAMILAR WITH SOME BOARD MEMBERS,AS
MY LATE WIFE WORKED WITH JOHN MOLINARI IN
HIS "REAL JOB"IN THE INSURANCE FIELD.
SOME WAY I MISSED THIS BOOK ON ITS FIRST RUN AND
ONLY LEARNED ABOUT IT AFTER SEEING THE ARTHOR ON
CSPAN'S ARTHOR SERIES. TO SAY THAT IT WAS JUST
WHAT I HAD BEEN MISSING IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT!
I HAD ALWAYS WONDERED WHAT WOULD CAUSE SUCH A
MAN WITH DAN WHITE'S CORE VALUES TO CHANGE
SO COMPLETLY; WELL NOW I KNOW,All MY QUESTIONS
ANSWERED FULLY. ALSO THE ADDED CD WITH
THE TAPES LEAVE NO DOUBT.
GREAT BOOK,GREAT RESEARCH,A MUST READ

I felt a connection to this book when the author talked about Dan's baseball season at Wilson. He had transferred over from Riordan High in his Jr. or Sr. year and played for Jim Witt on the school baseball team at Wilson in the early 60's. Witt was also my baseball coach at Polytechnic High in 1956-57.

I liked the way author Mike Weiss made San Francisco itself a character in the story. Vivid descriptions of neighborhoods like Visitation Valley, Sunnydale ,the Excelsior - Districts that seldom get mentioned in stories and tourist propaganda about San Francisco.

This book is a revealing look at DAN WHITE a man who was raised an Irish-Catholic in San Francisco. He was in the Army in Vietnam, became a San Francisco Policeman and later a City Fireman. He ran and won for Supervisor representing parts of San Francisco Dan had grown up in.

In the end he killed Mayor George Moscone after he refused to reappoint Dan to his seat on the board that he had recently resigned from. When he found out Moscone had appointed someone else he pulled out a gun and shot Moscone several times finally firing a few rounds into his head. He then walked across to the other side of City Hall and shot Harvey Milk in the same way.

He called his wife and turned himself in. He was tried and convicted of Manslaughter and given 5 years jail time. He got out in less time, came back to San Francisco and later committed suicide.

This is as much a story about 1978 San Francisco as it is about Dan White. I happened to watch CSPAN's - Book channel which conducted an interview with Mike Weiss - shown in mid 2011. The book first came out in 1984. Highly recommended.
