Black Workers, Their Unions and the Struggle for Freedom in South Africa. Black Power in South Africa: The Evolution of an Ideology. Denis MacShane and Cyril Ramaphosa ( Denis MacShane . Black workers, their unions and the struggle for freedom in South Africa’, was published in 1984.

Denis MacShane and Cyril Ramaphosa ( Denis MacShane ). Cyril Ramaphosa has waited a long, long time to lead South Africa. He arrives as his nation’s leader at the same age as Churchill in 1940. In a book I wrote in 1984, I described Ramaphosa thus: To organise the mineworkers, the independent trade unions sent one of their legal experts, Cyril Ramaphosa, to begin an organising drive. In two years (1982-84) the National Union of Mineworkers has become South Africa’s biggest black trade union, with 70,000 members.

The book was and remains a fundamental contribution to the struggle . The issues that Henry Winston raised centered on the unity of the class and national questions. Black workers played a tremendous role at that stage in the fight against slavery, and in the post-slavery period and during Reconstruction, Black farmers and working-class ex-slaves played a key role in the fight for a new democracy. These workers brought their skill and organization, and the power of the labor movement, into the African American fight for freedom and the civil rights movement, and in that sense their role was historic and critical to moving forward.

Based on research and interviews with workers and union leaders in South Africa, this book examines and analyses the the history of the black working class struggle, its achievements, its internal differences, its politics and international links.
