Caribbean literature is the term generally accepted for the literature of the various territories of the Caribbean region. Literature in English specifically from the former British West Indies may be referred to as Anglo-Caribbean or, in historical contexts, West Indian literature, although in modern contexts the latter term is rare. Most of these territories have become independent nations since the 1960s, though some retain colonial ties to the United Kingdom.
The Caribbean Studies Association (CSA) is an independent professional organization. Of broad interest to scholars of Latin America and the Caribbean; racial and national identity in the Americas; as well as scholars working on (or interested in working on) Dominican materials.
This work is the sixth volume of a series on Caribbean studies. Recent events in the region illustrate just a few possible areas of study. Previous efforts have focused on Caribbean history, economics, and development, as well as specific studies of urban Jamaica, democracy in Dutch-speaking areas and early Guyanese colonial society. For this volume Surlin & Soderlund have melded pan-Caribbean and country specific articles. Jamaica and Trinidad/ Tobago have loosened restrictions on broadcasting. Will other islands follow?
