During the struggles against apartheid in South Africa, Shamim worked as a women’s rights, community, media and political activist within community organisations and NGOs. She was a co-founder of the publications SPEAK and Agenda, both of which highlighted women’s rights and gender issues. Since mid-1994, she has worked with women’s organisations, trade unions, social movements and NGOs on rights and development, with a specific focus on women’s rights.
