This is a refreshing change from the historical/cultural books about central and eastern Europe, which are usually written by literary academics traveling under more probable circumstances, . someone else tends to the details that Jones was forced to handle without large disposable funds.

For years Tristan Jones had nursed the dream of sailing across Europe, taking his three-hulled craft, the Outward Leg, through the rivers and canals of the Continent from the North Sea to the Black Sea-a voyage of more than two thousand miles. He had already met and matched almost every other nautical challenge, including a solo crossing of the Atlantic in 1983, only one year after his leg was amputated.

Jones, the irrepressible Welsh sailor who told of his circumnavigation of the globe in Outward Leg (LJ 4/15/86) writes of yet another remarkable voyage. This tale recounts a river trip from the North Sea to the Black Sea through the heart of Europe by way of the Rhine and the Danube in his oceangoing trimaran, Outward Leg. A river voyage offers its own unique hazards, but this voyage had unusual ones. Jones's saga of his dealings with the regulations of the Eastern bloc nations brings home the vast gulf between our lives and those of Eastern Europeans

What's not to love about Tristan Jones and his crazy adventures. This is more interesting to those traveling down the Danube River, or for sailors. For them, Jones has a great, Celtic style. On format, the book is big to carry conveniently when traveling.

The content was interesting; it is a bit tedious to read, however, due to the writing style, so it took me longer than most books of that length. Great insights into what it is like to deal with Easter European countries as a visitor.

Tristan Jones book are solid, but this was not the best one I've read. Go for Ice or the Incredible Voyage first, as they are a little more fun to read. There's a great deal of interesting commentary on viewing Cold War-era East and West Germany from the Rhine if you don't mind an unapologetic imperial English bias.
Mori
Not as thrilling as Incredible Voyage but held my interest. The troubles behind the Iron Curtain made for some difficulties, but became somewhat predictable and boring. It should be interesting to those acquainted with yachting.
Umor
Hard to read.

The man takes on what no other will. Jones has done it again. Ken
