When Sharon arrives late to a meeting with a friend in need she finds him dead - murdered. Sharon's guilt and natural curiosity land her a job investigating the murder courtesy of the house's owner. Sharon's investigation finds that the house where her friend was murdered was located in quite a controversial spot. The house was being restored in a really gaudy fashion that infuriated traditional historical values. The house also was causing those native to the neighborhood to lose their homes because the restoration (one of many) was causing the values to go up. Sharon also finds out that the father of house's owner had been murdered there a couple of years ago. That murder had been attached to a burglary where one of the items stolen had been a lamp with a chesire cat's eye.

In the traditional Muller fashion McCone follows the clues where they lead - eventually to the murderer. Although the reasoning behind the murder was a bit hokey, all the dots were connected so it made sense.

I didn't care for it as much as the first one. It took too long to "get to the point" and the route it took in between was not intriguing enough. I normally can read a good book in a very short period of time. With this book, I started and stopped and read several other books in between.

I've always been a Marcia Muller fan, but I can't seem to finish reading this one. So far it's sorta' disappointing. Maybe my taste has changed? Will try again to slog through it.

I'm a fan of early Grafton and Nero Wolfe novels. I read like some people listen to music, enjoying the quality of the writing. This book did not have that.

Library edition hardcover in excellent shape, with good edges and no markings.

Very good I enjoyed this book. I have only recently "discovered Ms. Muller's books so this is only my second one so far, but I shall be reading more.

The Sharon McCone type, again. A page-turner with heart, but poorly edited.
