Bloodlines, by Jan Burke, A-minus

Edgar® Award winner Jan Burke continues her USA Today bestselling Irene. Bloodlines, by Jan Burke, A-minus. Borrowed from the National Library Service for the Blind. This is my first Irene Kelly mystery, and I understand it to be pretty late in the series. But, knowing nothing about the series, it could stand alone pretty well. The book is in three parts.

Irene, now married to homicide detective Frank Harriman, is a veteran reporter facing the impending closing of the Las Piernas News Express. With circulation down and young reporters fresh out of journalism school replacing longtime staffers, Irene can't help but wish for the good old days when she worked with O'Connor. So when the baffling kidnap-burial case resurfaces, Irene's tenacious love for her mentor and journalistic integrity far outweigh any fears or trepidation

Although the Chris-Craft was by no means the most expensive boat they could afford-pocket change to them, he was sure-Jack thought of how tightfisted they were with their boys, Todd and Warren, and how readily they spent money on themselves. He asked if Warren would be joining them on the boat. Thelma frowned, openly displeased by the question.

I won't go into too much detail,(since others have done so) but I have only positives to say about this novel. I thought the plot was well developed and the way she wrote the story in three stages to create and explain the mystery was very creative. The explanations for the family life were excellent! I also felt the characters were interesting and made you want to read more about them. O'Connor and Jack were very good together and believable...Yes, Irene came late into the picture but didn't that fit into the genre that Burke is writing about?

Too many authors don't develop the plot or the characters or leave descriptions too vague. I felt that Jan Burke hit all three! I am going to go back now to read her other novels...
While I think Ms. Burke has real talent, this book left me cold. Despite all the other very positive reviews, I found the ongoing "back-stories" confusing and hard to follow. Our "heroine", Irene Kelly, doesn't even appear until page 149! And there are just too many characters, and too many family relationships to keep straight. Not to mention too many references to other plot-lines not being explained in this book. Perhaps this book should have been separated into two, or even three, stand-alone books. I think "Bloodlines" would have benefited enormously from more capable editing.
Complex and Highly Entertaining

Thoroughly enjoyed it! Read it on vacation. Love the older setting and details. Burke is one of my favourite authours.
Enjoyed this book and have tried to read all her books.
Outstanding. Jan Burke is an outstanding author. Irene Kelly novels are funny and smart. Great reads over and over again.
This novel was rather entertaining to read. I enjoyed all the flashbacks and getting to know more about O'Connor. It's filled with twists and turns and characters galore, but remains an interesting read
Enjoyed reading this novel, not an exception mystery, but good enough to hold your interest and keep you into the book.
