Very disappointing...not up to her usual fascinating stories. I found myself skipping pages. I have read most of the books she writes but will be more careful in choosing in the future.

This novel is another fine example of a character-driven plot. Ms. Rendell has developed her characters so well that they are the primary drivers of the plot. She doesn't ignore the motivations and idiosyncrasies of her villains either. This is a great read.

This is the second book Ruth Rendell published, in a career that has produced over 60 full-length novels and many short stories. This one is fun, fast, and entertaining and we see many elements that will recur in her later work. The mystery is good, the characters vivid, and the setting very British-cozy. Recommended.

This is an early Rendell that lacks the fine hand the author shows in her later works. However, I bought it for a long flight overseas and found it delivered a delightful diversion from the endless stream of mediocre movies that was my alternative entertainment.

I admire Ruth Rendell's writing and although this is far from her best, I recommend it on a rainy Tuesday when nothing else is shaking

A good study of different personalities. Excellent twist at the end. I really didn't' suspect the killer until the very end.

As always, very quick jump into suspense with a more than ample selection of potential suspect. Economic verbiage that, in this case, runs you through a gauntlet to an unexpected end. Bravo
.
Ruth Rendell is not a mystery writer, she is a novelist who writes about mysteries. Her characters are always clearly delineated and interestingly individual, even the real dummies, and it's very hard for writers who are intelligent to create a believable dummy. This mystery unfolds like an origami box and the contents are a real surprise.
