Tar Heel Ghosts has been added to your Cart. When I was coming along, just about everybody in the fifth or sixth grade read this book and The Devil's Tramping Grounds both by John Harden.

Tar Heel Ghosts has been added to your Cart. Both of these books are a collection of short descriptions of factual descriptions of the tales of Ghosts and mysterious phenomenon in North Carolinaa. Many of these tales have been handed down since the 1700's and 1800's. Others are historical histories of strange phenomenon that still are around today like the Brown Mountain Lights and the Devil's Tramping Grounds. I really enjoyed them as a child so I decided to reread them again.

More than merely entertaining, Tar Heel Ghosts captures the spirit of North Carolina's past. North Carolina's ghost stories have infinite variety. There are mountainous ghosts and seafaring ghosts; colonial ghosts and modern ghosts; gentle ghosts and roistering ghosts; delicate lady ghosts and fishwife ghosts; home ghosts and ghosts that just want to be noticed. Mysterious signs and symbols appear-small black crosses, galloping white horses, strangely moving lights, floating veils, lifelike apparitions, skulls, dripping blood, and things that go bump in the night.

An amazing assortment of twenty-three stories and ten "short shorts" comprise this popular selection. More than merely entertaining, Tar Heel Ghosts captures the "spirit" of North Carolina's past.North Carolina's ghost stories have infinite variety. There are mountainous ghosts and seafaring ghosts; colonial ghosts and modern ghosts; gentle ghosts and roistering ghosts; delicate lady ghosts and fishwife ghosts; home ghosts and ghosts that just want to be noticed. Mysterious signs and symbols appear--small black crosses, galloping white horses, strangely moving lights, floating veils, lifelike apparitions, skulls, dripping blood, and "things that go bump in the night." At least one North Carolina ghost got himself into a court record, and other ghostly phenomena have attracted scientific investigation. These stories have a marked realistic North Carolina flavor. I just love this book. I am a 50 something who grew up in the old north state. When I was coming along, just about everybody in the fifth or sixth grade read this book and The Devil's Tramping Grounds both by John Harden.

In going back over them I discovered that the stories are taken from a radio show that John Harden had back in the fourties. This made the book all the more interesting as I am able to see these stories and North Carolina itself through the eyes of someone from sixty years ago when life was simpler and probably more enjoyable.

This book is kind of short and very easy to read. If you like this sort of thing you will not be disappointed.

Note I have written this same review for The Devil's Tramping Grounds

Great stories for those of us from North Carolina who can appreciate the history and lore of this great state. Loved this book when I was growing up. Glad to still see it available after all these years. Now I can share these spine tingling tales with my children too. The cover has been updated but still the same great book it always was. Frankly though I prefer the old blue cover with the ghostly man on the front.

Interesting, not real scary.

My book came with the new cover. Not the cover shown but it was still the correct book.

This was one of the books in my elementary school library that I would check out over and over again. I've always been fascinated by "true" stories of ghosts, especially in my home state of NC. If you're a fan of the paranormal, North Carolina, or both then you'll probably enjoy this.
